vw golf 1 Hand brake cable and disks.
Hi all. Ok so I have converted my wife's citi velo from drums to disks at the rear.
So I had to cut a small section away from the axel to accommodate one of the caliper mounting bolts.
But what I wanted to find out what do you do with the hand brake cable. There is no way I will be able to fit the cable and if I do fit it the angle will be way to much and it will snap the cable.
I used golf 2 gti stub axels and disks and calipers.
I did the conversion because I got all the parts for the same price as new drums and shoes for the car.

Drums would be a straight fit, having parts at same price and now you need to mod to make it work.DJLSchoemm wrote:I did the conversion because I got all the parts for the same price as new drums and shoes for the car.

hehe sorry for the spelling this auto correct is driving me crazy!!!
I know it would have been a straight fit. But I did the conversion so would just like to know must I cut the axel or something to get the cables to work.
Yes you use Jetta 2 cables.

Re: vw golf 1 Hand brake cable and disks.
The velo has a valve at the master cylinder that reduces brake force at the back.
I tested it and the front wheels lock up but not the rears.

Re: vw golf 1 Hand brake cable and disks.
1st off, did you fit the calipers in the right postion? It is possible to fit them in the wrong postion if you swap the stub axles around. What handbrake cables are you using? The correct ones is Jumbo GTi (Goldwagen stock code A159). I used the existing handbrake cable guides on the rear axle, the cables goes into the calipers from the bottom and everything lines up 100%

Re: vw golf 1 Hand brake cable and disks.
My calipers sit exactly like yours.
I used the cables from a Jetta 2 with disk brakes at the back but the calipers and stub axels came from a Golf 2 GTI.
I also had to cut a section from the rear axel to get the one bolt that holds the caliper in place to fit.

The fact you had to cut something away doesn't bode well. Haven't heard of others who've done this conversion having to cut away stuff.

Hi, i did mine early this year. I fitted Jetta 2 second generation cables as the first generation ones were shorter. I bought them from GW.

Re: vw golf 1 Hand brake cable and disks.
On the Velociti and probably all the newer golf 1 models there are an valve at the front on the master cylinder before it goes to the rear. Will take a pic. That valve reduces braking force to the rear.
Works well the front locks up I could not get the rears to lock up yet.

I never fitted a bias on my Velo, never needed it - it had the same brakes as my GT.DJLSchoemm wrote:On the Velociti and probably all the newer golf 1 models there are an valve at the front on the master cylinder before it goes to the rear. I have no idea why my setup looks different. The stub axel can only go on one way ells the holes don't line up. I will have a look over the weekend and see if I can sort this out.
Thanks for the photos.
