TD1 – Main Dealer Warranty ‘Tuning’ Flag

Post by Rabbit222 »

TD1 is the VW Audi Group warranty ‘Flag’ for modified vehicles, this is something you should all be well aware of. If you’re not then please note; since the change in main dealer on-line diagnostic tools last year performance software can and will be seen when a vehicle is plugged into online at a main dealer. This is the case even if it’s switched to ‘stock’ mode.

Our recommendation is to make customers aware that their warranty will be affected if they have software installed on their vehicles, this isn’t anything new we’ve tried to never claim software is undetectable however prior to the new main dealer systems Revo software did tend to go unnoticed.

Dealers are told that ‘When assessing a warranty claim, it must be carefully ascertained whether, from the technical viewpoint, a connection exists between the modification and the damage. For example, a claim regarding the paintwork cannot be rejected because the vehicle concerned has been fitted with a more powerful engine.’

TD1 can be flagged in two ways:

1. Automatically when the vehicle is plugged in online and the system sees something non-standard on the ECU.

2. Manually when the technician sees something non-standard on the car. This can be anything from springs, filter, short-shifter to an uprated Turbo.

The following FAQ’s in relation to the software check have been circulated to main dealers:

Q The TD1 code is displayed, but the customer says that no performance enhancements have been made to his/her vehicle. How can you check what has been modified? A Only the manufacturer can check if the car has been modified. To do this, the control unit would have to be removed and sent to the manufacturer for testing. This process could take several weeks, and the customer would be charged for the cost of the testing. This cost could not be claimed under warranty or as goodwill.

Q Can the TD1 code be reversed? A Yes. If an approved software update is detected and applied during the diagnosis process, the TD1 code will be removed from our service systems.

Q If the vehicle has not been online to the Software Version Management database in the past but an online log has been sent, will this be enough to initiate the TD1 code? A No. The encrypted data can only be sent to SVM using the process stated above. The online diagnostic protocol is not part of this identification process.

Q Is the TD1 code sent in a message to the 5051 tester? A No. Currently, there is no message on the diagnostic machine to indicate that the ECU mapping has been altered. It must be checked as stated above (ie. Elsa, SAGA/)

Apparently they've had it for some time already.

Some guys spoke to the dealerships, and it was stated that it isn't an "Auto Flag", but rather when the logs get sent through.

And the technicians have a way around it for the time being, so no issues.

And also, its currently only for the DSG boxes, and will only cover the ECU's later in the year.

The question would be; when do they stick this ODIS thingy on your car? During a normal service routine? Or only when you bring your car in for problems? Also, even if your car does get flagged for TD1 whatever, they can't void your entire warranty. If I have issues with my airconditioner or power steering under my warranty period, it's still VW's job to fix that. Modified car or not.

This sucks
But I guess I understand why they doing it

Is this gonna slowdown the uptake of customers with new cars to the aftermarket tuning scene? I think lots of guys wont be willing to lose the warranty on a brand new car

Indeed.

Depends on the car. On the Mk6 I would seriously struggle to go back to stock now. Mk7 GTI stock I reckon I could live with.

Depends on how long you're gonna have the car. If you'll be selling within a year I wouldn't map it, but if you'll have it until the warranty is done anyway then I would. Mine has been modded since 1k on the clock and the only thing to go wrong so far was an injector getting stuck open just after 30k on the clock, which was replaced under warranty despite my mods as they deemed it general failure and not mod related.

Just a quick question gents: when you do plan on selling the car, it's easy to revert the hardware mods back to stock. For the ECU however, I know that Revo can flash the ECU back to stock (they did it with my car in the past) - would that bypass the TD1 code then if it was flashed back to a "stock" ECU?

If so - no problems!

This is going to cause some headaches for second hand dealerships selling traded in vehicles that have been reverted back to stock without the dealership ever knowing that the car was modded in the first place. So if it is assumed the car should be under warranty to the low mileage and age criteria, the new buyer will potentially be buying a car out of warranty without knowing.
What will be his rights?

Odis will pick up that the vehicle ecu had been remapped and will flag the TD1 box.
Alot of dealerships are skeptical to do trade ins on modified cars as due to this.

If your car gets mapped to stock, there is nothing the Odis system will flag since the ecu will be back to 100% stock. Remember, your tuner should be able to load your car back to 100% stock. I'm not talking about "stock mode", I'm talking about an ecu where everything is back to stock.

Also, if your car is out of the 3 year warranty period and you trade it in, I don't see the issue? Or - just don't trade your car in at VW. I'm actually thinking that the second the dealerships refuse to trade in cars, that's when they will lose sales and people will simply move to a different brand, such as BMW.

had a very interesting conversation as vw while my car was being serviced. around 3-5 cars have already had their warranties voided because of the new system.

personally if car is in warranty I would not mod. I mean u paid that extra bit to ensure car is sorted but after warranty done go ahead.

I see what u saying here bud and know that a guy who has had his warranty voided due to the new system, vw asked him to return car to stock and prove this to them. sounds like he has to go through to a whole story on this and then vw MIGHT reinstate it.
