Unexpected mishap...with pics!

Post by Naku786 »

:hi: Guys,

This is not a query but rather sharing my experience of an issue that kinda puzzled me for a day  Maybe it could help someone here

So here goes...

Last week Monday my car refused to start (yay no work for me :hurray: ) First I suspected the starter gave in, so jacked the car up & stripped out the starter & noticed some unusual wear.

Image

Anyways tested the starter & all seemed fine, but decided to strip & check if brushes & coil was ok... all looked perfect. Tried again with a starter from my friends Citi Golf & still the same. It sounded like the starter was spinning freely... :fear:

Checked that the starter bush was in the correct place then noticed something strange when look through starter hole on the gearbox...
dropped the box & this is what I found

Image

Image

The ring gear from my flywheel decided to seperate from the flywheel & was spinning freely inside the box

stripped the flywheel & took it to the engineers who fitted the ring gear back & balanced the flywheel & all is well now.

Honestly the first time I have ever seen this happen.. ever! This happened over a day or so as was quite baffled & never suspected what happened to have happened.

and a ring gear is an interference type fitment, it should never come loose

you got a flux capacitor strapped to that starter motor?

My grandfather once told me of how the ring gear on his cortina wore off and he had to get a new one heat tempered on, but I have never in my life seen one come off like that just from normal use.
