Caddy Build - ADY
Hey everyone
So my bum is itching as of late and I had a look at some options (E36 M3, vtec...) and have pretty much settled on building a caddy.
Why? Seems easy enough, shows great results and won't break my bank!!
I've done a lot of reading on the forum and is VERY informative, so please excuse me if I ask questions that have already been asked, but I'd like some answers pertaining to my specific build.
The Purpose :
I want to keep the caddy clean and understated.
Hoping to get a late model 1.6i
Will only be used on weekends
Will be building the ADY on the side
Don't want to break any records, just for personal use
Need it to be reliable
Wants :
2.0lt 8v
Bigger front brakes
Suspension
Shopping List :
2.0lt 8v ADY motor
210mm 1800 Flywheel & Clutch (9 Pin)
282/288 cam
Service kit & All oil seals
Front brakes
Suspension
Management
Branch & Freeflow
Questions :
1.1 Out of all the available motors, it seems the 2.0 ADY 8v is the most popular for these conversions. Should I at a later stage decide to do a small turbo or gas, would this motor still be suficcient? Ideally (and I'm quite the gadget person ) I would love to put a 20v inside but that seems waaaaaaay too complicated for my small mind (and expensive), so the ADY will do for now, unless anyone has another option?
1.2 SHould I, for some reason, decide on 16v. What would the general preference be? 1.8 or 2.0? Which one?
2. I'm not aiming for high speeds, rather strong acceleration, Which cam would suit the purpose best?
3. For the front brakes it seems the Mk2 GTi is quite popular. Is this viable or is there an aftermarket alternative? It seems that rear drum upgrades to discs are overrated (and I remember the work involved in doing it to my GT) so can I leave them as they are and just upgrade the fronts?
4. Would like a nice set of coil overs for the front. Any specific suggestions? 99.9% street use, but I may be persuaded to try the track once or twice (I stay very far from any track so no use in setting up specifically for track use). I'm gaining years so I'm not really after looks, mostly great handling!
5. Management... Now this seems to be a whole new can of worms. I've read lots of comments regarding the MP9 with piggyback or Unichip. But I need something reliable (ek wil nie sukkel nie, nie weer nie ). Dictator, Gotech, PP ???? What's the general opinion? Please keep in mind future developments (maybe turbo or gas).
6. Gearbox... Will the standard gearbox from the caddy be sufficient? Would I need to upgrade the cvs/side shafts?
7. Branches... 4-2-1 or 4-1 with single diameter or "thicker" to "thinner" pipe (excuse my lack of knowledge regarding pipe diamters )?
8. Any other pitfalls to look out for? I'd like to get this right from the start!!
Thanks again and in advance for the answers! You guys seem to have a really cool community going and I hope to become a part of it!
Cheers!

Thanks for the reply Aslam.aslam325 wrote:Little knowledge that i have
Ady is a very good motor.if you going to look.for more hp everytime rather fit a 16v motor
Vr6 front brakes and braided hoses
Jom coilovers from ddm imports
Im a mp9 type of person....but pp looks to be very good only and i repeat only if tuned by panic on the forum
Ffz gearbox
Just think for now 8v's gonna be lighter on the pocket and less intense, as I'd like to build myself (with limited knowledge), but I know 16v is the answer in the long run.
VR6 fronts I heard of, but that leaves me with 5holes???
JOM's look good!!
I stay in the middle of nowhere so a quick run to a tuner is out for me. I need something that I can (maybe) fix myself or at least have one of the local "tuners" take a look at.
FFZ box - Check!
Thanks again bud!

Re: Caddy Build - ADY
if you are planning on boost one day, you can either stick with the 8v and run a cross-flow head (have a look at Jetta2's build thread, very pleasing results and he uses it as a daily) or you can pop on a 16v head which will drop your compression ratio down to around 8.5:1 which is great for boost!! and you have the plus of having a higher flowing head.
I'm literally can't evening!

How will the stock crank, rods and pistons hold up under boost?

ady wil work nice,std 90kw 180nm
-can fit short mp9 loom R1500 and decoded and chipped box R450 if u suply box or R900+if he suply's box for 2l from allen hout bay 0834421122 u canscan it with vagcom or vw tool and pirate cables are R350-500 so then u can self diagnose and fix it if u have a laptop
-u need a map sensor and to dril a hole on intake and fit it to the ady intake and mp9 coil and fit a 2e distr in the ady to get it to work, the trottelbody and injectors and knock sensor on ady works with mp9 loom/box, u also need feulpump and 8mm steel feed line from pump to rail,u can keep the std 6mm carb line for return
-u can fit a 16v head on the ady sub with a steal headgasket and be right for turbo and 8.5cr,u just need to machine the pistons for 16v
-u get the brake kit from volkspares for the vr6 upgrade, there is brakes to move the calipers out and the disc are bored to 4 hole,so fit and go,just fit vented disc pads from cti or velocity,u can also buy the brakets and vr6 280mm brakes and dril it your self to 4x100
-all caddy's come with big cv inner and outer so wil be strong enoug for n/a 2l8v,when u go turbo the outers wil brake if u drive like a baboon
-branch u can buy cowley or powerflow or tnt,R1250+- and fit it your self and get a 57mm 2 box freeflow fitted ,exh places ask R800 to fit branch that's crazy
-get tuning art front coilies or jom as they are softer for daily R2500+-
-remove the second leafspring from the top at the back to drop the back too
-282 wil be nice for dailly and power on top,if u wane go 8v turbo rather get a 272 or 276 as it wil work on turbo motor too
-manegement that everyone can tune is dictator ,depending where u stay
look in my long build tread, there are picks of the vr6 brake upgrade and enough info on 16v turbo

Unfortunately caddys in SA come with 1.8carb and 1.6 carb. The late models only came with 1.6 carb only. The fuel tank can be modded to run fuel injection. Late models already come with ffz box. Caddy front brakes are already vented as well.Rooi_Willie wrote:Hey everyone

Re: Caddy Build - ADY
I've heard the Caddy tank is fine for fuel injection, just need a high pressure pump. ADY manifold comes without MAP sensor if you want to run MP9, you can source a MP9 intake manifold and use that, alternatively run Dicktator, doesn't need MAP. If you are looking at going big on the cam at a later stage (298), I suggest going with aftermarket from the start, MP9 doesn't like the big cam, it confuses the MAP and the ECU.Rooi_Willie wrote:Torker wrote:Rooi_Willie wrote:

Air Temp (Optional), Water Temp, TPS Signal, Dizzy Signal, 3-pin coil (or 2-pin coil with TP100). It will switch your Fuel pump and injectors and do idling control if needed.

U said u stay in the middle of no where,we stil don't know where that is,but if u want reliability and wane be able to fix it your self u can go mp9 and get everything as I said,it is beter to fit dictator if u wane turbo the car later or go big cams,u can use the ady as is on the dictator, just need a 2e distr and mp9 coil as it has a ignition module built in and give good spark even under 1bar boost,or else u can go tp100 and normal coil but cost more and need to get tp100 plug then and all,on the ady wiring u get with the motor there is a plug for the mp9 coil normally
But if u go dictator u really need a tuner....if it is tuned right first time and the car stand a day by him so he can do cold start the next morning and sort that out it wil be reliable alot

You can go dicktor or mp9. With a good tuner dicktor works like a dream.
Im running mp9 on mine, upgraded my fuel pump and running injection on an 82.
Was my build last year. She runs like a dream #weekendspecial.
Busy doing a respray at the moment, if you need help on your build and a good dicktor tuner leme know.
Have a friend in comso running sick cars , specialist tuner...

Klerksdorpmaranou wrote:U said u stay in the middle of no where,we stil don't know where that is,but if u want reliability and wane be able to fix it your self u can go mp9 and get everything as I said,it is beter to fit dictator if u wane turbo the car later or go big cams,u can use the ady as is on the dictator, just need a 2e distr and mp9 coil as it has a ignition module built in and give good spark even under 1bar boost,or else u can go tp100 and normal coil but cost more and need to get tp100 plug then and all,on the ady wiring u get with the motor there is a plug for the mp9 coil normally
But if u go dictator u really need a tuner....if it is tuned right first time and the car stand a day by him so he can do cold start the next morning and sort that out it wil be reliable alot
It's not really that far away from everything. +/- 200km from JHB so I wouldn't want to drive all the way there often. There is a couple of local tuners, but from my GT build a couple of years ago, I haven't had ANY good experiences
So what exactly would I need for N/A 2.0 8v in my Caddy if I go out and buy an ADY motor...?

Outside of Gauteng Klerksdorp probably got the most tuners so it shouldn't be a problem to find a good one...Rooi_Willie wrote:

Re: Caddy Build - ADY
Are you sure? I'm sure I've seen 1.6i's advertised...........
The Caddy panelvan came with 1.6i motor...
Those are the new Generation caddy. Not the mk1/ pickup type. You can use the existing caddy fuel tank tank as the golf and caddy tanks are different.
