Looks like the skinned the intake with CF.Neuk wrote:Is that CF over fibreglass?

Most likely due to cost? To make CF structurally rigid is quite expensive so they can make the structure from fibreglass and then just overlay the CF without having to make it part of the rigid structure, so to speak...vdub caddy wrote:Now we will never hear the end of it.Neuk wrote:I thought my eyes were deceiving me due to old age but I may be right...
Wonder why they would have skinned it though?
Certainly a company like GruppeM would have a mould of the intake.Neuk wrote:Most likely due to cost? You need an autoclave to properly cure and mould carbon fibre correctly to get maximum strengthvdub caddy wrote:Certainly a company like GruppeM would have a mould of the intake.Neuk wrote:Most likely due to cost? Thus creating the carbon piece from the mould, and then vacuuming the carbon mould to make it structurally rigid.
Thats how all CF seats are made and they are rigid.
Yep, as SmellyPolonyHam has said, an Autoclave is the key and it is one **** expensive piece of kit making it probably not feasible as the intake housing isn't really a piece that needs to be strong like a suspension piece in CF for example...PoLonY wrote:You need an autoclave to properly cure and mould carbon fibre correctly to get maximum strengthvdub caddy wrote:Certainly a company like GruppeM would have a mould of the intake.Neuk wrote:Most likely due to cost? that's what makes it really expensive to use just pure carbon fibre without a fibreglass base...
I doubt it is worth the time and money for them to make it out of pure carbon fibre...

My apr intake box and intake pipe is 100% carbon. They even market it as aerospace grade carbon fibre.vdub caddy wrote:Now we will never hear the end of it.Neuk wrote:I thought my eyes were deceiving me due to old age but I may be right...

So, APR did have a hand in building rockets to go to outer spaceruan9n wrote:My apr intake box and intake pipe is 100% carbon. No fool, they used off cuts from the rocket.Neuk wrote:

That is not anywhere near as exciting, I am dissapoint...vdub caddy wrote:No fool, they used off cuts from the rocket.Neuk wrote:

Actually apr don't make these intakes...they outsource them from a company called carbonio, that's why the intake is called the apr carbonio. But yes aerospace grade carbon fibre....don't turn the clamps too tightly or you'll feel like those carbon splinters have been pushed up your rectum, these things are stupidly over priced! The stage 2 pipe and intake box with k&n filter cost R7000 new! I bought the intake box and filter for 2k iirc, used for 4 months and the stage2 pipe for R600! Charou style!vdub caddy wrote:No fool, they used off cuts from the rocket.Neuk wrote:

Either way it makes your GTI go like a rocket....Neuk wrote:That is not anywhere near as exciting, I am dissapoint...vdub caddy wrote:No fool, they used off cuts from the rocket.Neuk wrote:
