MK5 GTi won't rev up

Post by VokofWagen »

Howzit guys
I used the search function but it takes too long with my phone.

The car had a fuel pressure issue due to the cam follower wearing out. So the fuel pump was replaced the cam was replaced, intake, all the valves and sensors connected to the intake, dv, pcv, fuel filters etc

Now when the car starts it has a rough and lumpy idle and sounds really bad, it becomes smooth eventually. The car smokes on idle and when driving. The car won't rev past 3000rpm. The only fault that it throws out is feul press and 5 different pumps have been fitted.

Any links or advise will be much appreciated.

Ps its an axx motor with around 200k km on dsg

Are you sure the cam was replaced and not just the cam follower?

Who worked on the car?
Do you smell fuel coming from the enginebay? Any noticeable oil stains?

I know this sounds weird but try changing the spark plugs.
We once had the same issue with sparkplugs fitted that same day. Turbo car sparkplugs recommended by Goldwagen broke that very same day and the car could not rev higher than 3000rpm. It just starts to grobble at 3000rpm

Coilpack
Sparkplugs
Leak
PCV bust or not connected correctly
Popped DV also causes jerk, no power and wont rev up

Howzit
I have not worked on the car in a while, but decided I must try fix it! I keep getting fuel pressure error. It will not go past 6.5bar. We have checked the voltage on the plugs and they all right and the pump is new. Any ideas?

I assume you mean rail pressure?
Check your hpfp cam follower. I suspect you may need a new one. And camshaft. And pump.

Oh I see you have changed all that.

Check the pump connections and stuff. What pressure does the rail hit when you log the car? Should be 50 bar at idle.

Yeah most of it has been replaced. I have read that even though the cam follower is smoothe its height can be worn down.

I am not to clued up with running logs etc but I did see its saying 46.3bars.

I will be replacing the brass fitting and the bolt next!

Will hopefully be able to keep the thread updated.

You should be seeing 100bar on a stock mk5 from what i remeber. Stage2 mk5's hit 115bar and 2+ hit 130bar. What you are experiencing are fuelcuts. Maybe the banjo bolt isn't tight enough and it is leaking pressure or the stock fuelpump is fubar, maybe even the LPFP is moertoe and not supplying enough fuel from the tank to the hpfp.

He said he sees 46 bar at idle - that is too low. Spec is 50. He also sees 6 bar from the rear pump, and that is just fine.

Maybe fuel filter?
If the banjo bolt was leaking there'd be a hell of a fuel smell in the engine bay.

Lumpy idle, smoke on idle...

Maybe a leaking injector? That would prevent the rail reaching the pressure it needs at low RPM?
