1400i with 276 cam
hey guys i have a 276 cam installed in my 2005 1400i Citi golf,Im looking for the Correct timing for the cam,its a little dead under 2500 rpm, when i drive slow in traffic it feels like the car is in a lower gear and feels jumpy,it regains power above 2500rpm....and its insane on petrol, cleaned the Airflow meter, distributor points and checked plugs before installing the cam,1 of my friends did the timing and everything was okay for 2 weeks or so....PLEASE HELP

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
You can dial the cam in a bit better if its off but the main reason for your hassles is that its too much cam for the 1400 engine. If it ran fine for a while then it could also be a issue with the management so have it diagnosed.

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
276 is a fail for a 1.4 motor, sorry but thats your problem, get a 268. All you trying to do now is mask or patch the problem, lack of torque comes to mind, i am sure you should be able to trade it with someone if you ask / advertise

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
max you can go, i reckon a 298 can be made to fit with some clearances needed to be grinded to the head to make sure the lobes turns freely, then you also need to install a RPM kit as the increased lift is going to cause problems with your standard valvetrain, you can even go bigger, but anything above 300' is usually solid lifter territory so then you need to convert your head to solid lifter trim. However on a 1400base thats pretty pointless unless you plan to rev it to 14000RPM or something ridiculously high, its really not going to help fitting a bigger cam, your problem, you already have a too big cam, either increase displacement or easiest and cheapest option, change to a smaller cam - 268estas. A cam and throttle sizes are a few exceptions to the rules when it comes to the saying bigger is always better.
fairly worked 1600 motors can run well with a 276 cam, if memory serves the max allowed limit for the goldagen challenge rules is a 288'cam for the class-c 1600 motors, but then they rev the crap out of them and they not being driven daily so the no or crap idling and lack of low down power is irrelevant for them.

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
sure, there are a lot of guys who upgrade later on to something bigger that have stuff floating around or gathering dust, a post in the for sale section should sort you out, otherwise a new estas billet goes for just over R1K if you dont find a 268. best of luck. with a 268 your peak power might drop marginally but the over all drive ability, idling and torque curve will improve

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
We tried a 282 on 1.4 and it was too long for the car and idled heavy was heavy on fuel but made power up top. The 276 should behave similar and it is way too long for the 1.4... Go 268 you won't be sorry

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
Have this checked. If the car was running fine when the cam was fitted and it's not running fine now then it's not the cam? Check the coil etc..
I had a 272 *** cam, Vernier pulley, Timing and fuel advanced via vagcom, 55 step 57 free flow with 2 small box setup and a and a BMC cone (Worked like a cold air induction) and my 1.4i was VERY Fast..
Under 2500rpm I had no poor power really but here from 2800 to 6000rpm my car pulled hard.
Hope this helps

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
Take out the 276, put in a 268. Get it mapped and enjoy. As for the jerking under 2500 rpm the 268 does it as well. any dyno graphs you'd like to share?
Yip I still got my 1.4 Citi

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
Chopstix,I have a 268 cam in my 1.4 and its simply amazing.I don't have a chip, knn filter or exhaust done as yet and therefore my fuel consumption is a bit heavy but I assure you that its perfectly fine to drive and I don't have any issues under 2500rpm. My car was only sorted out with fueling via vagcom. Does your car have a chip fitted?
I do plan on getting my exhaust done in the near future and then a chip and tune. But for now I'm happy with my golfie.
Look around for a 268,I really looked around for a long long time but trust me it will come up,buy it,fit it and then sell your 276 which should not be a hassle at all.

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
No chip or anything....Just the Cowley Free flow box at the back and the cam....Stock Filter and everything....Like i said the car was awesome the 1st week, and the petrol usage was fine,If i can only sort that part out then ill keep the 276

Re: 1400i with 276 cam
As said before, for drivability, the 276 is not the ideal cam for a 1.4. In my opinion, it was a dog to drive. I always had to down shift when I wanted to pass a car, or else my car would just give me the o_0 look and tune me NO. Used to jerk under 2500rpm as well. This was with a Unichip. In all fairness, once that cam got to it's happy place in the rev range, oh my word. It left a smile on my face. But even stock 1.4's would outsprint me in first and second gear. If you really want to hang on to your 276, fit a piggyback chip, Unichip, or Perfect Power. That will sort your fuelling issues out. Unless there is something else at fault, like your temperature sensor or something.chopstix wrote:No chip or anything....Just the Cowley Free flow box at the back and the cam....Stock Filter and everything....Like i said the car was awesome the 1st week, and the petrol usage was fine,If i can only sort that part out then ill keep the 276
Edit to add: I swopped my 276 out for a 268, best move I ever made.
