I know the mps is not the best car to mod but he's keen to do dat.

Thanks guys

Is it a black mps by any chance?

Local only chip that would work is the Uni Q, or import a chip

uniq doesn't work for those. There is only one piggyback that works for them and it's not local. It also only work up to a point.
Speak to Trevor Greenehe has some really good experience with tuning the stock management on those. 083 309 5033.
Once you start making decent HP they snap rods. There is also an issue with Thrust bearings that make the crank float which causes bent rods.

Go Nazkar.

I would actually suggest your friend registers on the Mazda Owners Club and ask the questions there... some sob stories about some of the supposed "Guru" Tuners...

Rods?
Conrods..

The MPS bent/throw/snap rods when you put any bit of extra power into the engine..

I had a mate snap a rod on a stock MPS cruising at 60..

The MKI MPS has really weak rods but I had thought that had been resolved on the MKII MPS. None the less Trevor has mapped many of them but if I were you I would first do rods then start mapping unless you going for a very mild map
