Hi Guys
I have a 91 Mk2 Jetta 2.0l Cli 16v, and it has the cable shift gearbox.
I remember years ago we had one as well and the cable shift gearbox was always a problem (Think it was manufactured by Bosch).
1.Had the gears set as it was giving problems with engaging 1st gear and reverse. Its fine now but what should I look out for on these gearboxes? Dropping from 3rd to second and from 5th to 4th was also a problem. What usually caused such problems?
The person I took it to was a VW service technician and said that VW has a special tool to set these gearboxes, is anyone aware of this?
My concern is that in the long term the cable shift will start giving problems. What should I look out for and what would be the best way to have this set so its rather solid/robust in the long run.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, to align the shifter and gearbox (cables) there's a special tool, but I used an allen key and it worked fine. All you do is release the cable clips on the gearbox side, lock the shifter in 1st (IIRC) and get the gearbox in 1st. Re-lock the clips and bob's your uncle.
If that's what you are referring to.

You can always look at "upgrading" to later cables (Mk4 perhaps). They should be better. I recall mine had plastic parts where as the newer ones were more metal than plastic.

All of those series of boxes and even the current ones have issues with synchro rings. They wear quite quick and cost a fortune.

Re: Jetta 2 16v/ Golf 2 16v Cable Shift Gearbox
Special tool se agterend ! I have alligned my Jettas gears more times than I care to remember and I have never used a special tool. What I did is put the box in reverse on the gear selector and on the box... then allign it on the seletor towerso the is little play ... I then go into the car and try to select 2nd and 5th if they go in easy you are done.. if not a few small adjustments and it's done,, take me less then 10 min.
As for the box itself.. don't rush / force or try to snap change a cable shift box.. you will F%^ck it up!

Re: Jetta 2 16v/ Golf 2 16v Cable Shift Gearbox
they really dont like quick changing at high rpms, slow changing is fine...
my way is:
unlock cables at tower.
tower in neutral
selector in neutral
move selector, side to side and leave in most centre position
unlock cables.
works every time.
oh yes: edit to add... the 02A had a plastic clip and would collapse making gear changing slightly difficult... fix was to upgrade to 02J tower and clips
