MK3 GS fuel tank leak

Post by Dirty Harry »

Howzit guys

Its the GS again, giving problems. The SO went this morning to fill up(first time since we have had the car since middle Jan this year) and about 3/4 way of it being filled(47l),petrol starts pissing out the petrol tank.I had a quick squiz and it seems as though its coming from above the joining seem. What are my options here?

Is it possible that because there has not been any fluid it dries out therefore causing this leak sort of like those wooden wine barrels or am thinking up **** here to try divert myself from replacing a petrol tank.

Help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Cheers
Harry

The tank is plastic, so it might have a crack or it got damaged somehow. But before you do anything, take out the boot carpet and remove the round black plate (3 screws) and check there for a leak.

But if it is leaking from the seam or it has a crack, you can have it plastic welded or get a new tank form a scrapyard. God luck.

Harry, if you can't fix it, go to ABC Auto Parts in Kempton, off allandale Road, there's about a 100 G3's there, might be cheaper/worth while to just get a new tank??

Most likely just the seal at the fuel cap where the sender unit and pickup sit. It is an absolutel bastard to put in correctly and with the swop to take the pump out and put old gauge and pickup in it probably got pinched or mis-installed. It's not a physical tank leak.

I think and hope I have sorted the problem out. I think I am still floating a bit from all the fumes as the tank was full. The damn cap was not tightened properly :bang: . I see what you mean its quite a ball ache to put the cap on properly but I managed to tighten it better. I shook the car from side to side to see if anything leaked out and looks like its fine.

Thanks for the help guys.
