Post by zniper »

Hi

I have a friend who wants to decat (remove catalytic converter) his 2006 Vw Polo 1.9TDi (highline - 74kw) , the car got 220000km on the clock and still no issues with the engine.

What is the pros and cons when doing this ?

anything else to look out for ?

At that mileage I would do it, should see EGT's drop and turbo spool up helped...

Definitely! Flip, at that mileage that mofo must be clogged as heck. I did a de-cat on my A4 1.9 TDI at just over 100k on the clock and it made a nice difference to turbo spool up.

howzit man,

I wanted to start a thread about this very same thing some time back.. have a look at the Seat - Sport forum - there is an extensive thread about decatting on a diesel - unfortunately there is no definate answer to this! which is why my car still has the cat on.

Most guys here with TDI's have decat without issues. The thread on the SEAT-SPORT forum has some guys saying you will kill turbo if you do it but in my mind you have more chance of damaging the turbo by not doing it at high mileage.
I had decat from 30000km I think on my IC TDI and had no issues till 77000km when it was sold and the car is still fine with new owner.
My friend did his 74kw TDI polo over a year ago and his is still 100%

No issues whatsoever for me and there is little possibility of an engine light as the PD TDi engines have no lambda sensors. It is definitely a little noisier and you can hear the turbo spool but I didn't notice any more smoke...

Noe issues on my jetta as well. I've done a decat about 2 years ago and still no issues. I can hear a slight turbo whistle sound at idle when i stand at the exhaust.

i recently did my 74kw cross polo .. the difference was amazing, turbo spools up faster and car is much much smoother now..

also very weird is that the cross polo only has one box now, but the car isnt loud at all,, still sounds oem with a jet like sound from the rear,, i love it....

i got mine done for R250 ....

I did mine a long time ago and no issues so far.

Mine cost me nothing as I unbolted the cat from the turbo and rest of the exhaust and bashed the cat material out and refitted the pipe back on.

Found this...

http://www.turboworks.co.za/gpage3.html

How to care for your turbo

In theory, a turbo is designed such that it will usually last as long as the engine. It does not require any special maintenance; and inspection is limited to a few periodic checks. However, to ensure that the turbo's lifetime is prolonged, the following engine manufacturer's service instructions must be strictly observed:

Oil change intervals
Correct oil as specified by engine manufacturer
Oil filter system maintenance
Always ensure correct oil-pressure is maintained
Air filter system maintenance
On diesel engines, use the best quality diesel available
Poor quality diesel will block the catalytic converter, which will lead to turbo failure
It is not uncommon to remove/replace blocked catalytic converters in order to prolong the life of the turbo

....
Never tamper with the vehicle’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) by “chipping” or “mapping” - your turbo is not designed for this (My edit  )
Always ensure services are performed by a reputable mechanical workshop

De-catted at around 110 000 km's. Car is on 147 000 now...no issues, don't expect any performance gains, just a slightly louder turbo whistle on occasion.

I have a straight pipe right through. Very little difference to engine noise in the cabin, definitely noticeable from outside, but then again, the sound is awesome. Done many thousand km's and no issues! I felt better response from the car as well

Who the hell voted no? Do it, like previously mentioned you could damage the turbo. but then you will bring down EGT's so in actual fact you will be helping it. Diesels don't like to run hot for a long time. Even with a full mufflerectomy I will give it horns for short bursts.
