golf 4 2.0 exhaust - make it softer!

Post by golfer23 »

so my golf was having a problem with the cat a few years back, so instead of forking out R14k at vw, i paid powerflow for a very standard system, the back box is very big, and the car only has one box as they can not put one by the cat.....
also, i got bit of a kit on the car, and the exhaust tip is is a big one to fill the design.....

so my question is, if i change to a smaller exhaust tip, will it help in making the sound softer?

No, fitting a smaller zorst tip won't make the sound level softer. Adding silencers will.
Has the Cat been removed? If it has, why not have a small diameter silencer fitted in the space it was in?

ya cat is gone......they told me that because the area where the cat is, it such a high heat area that they cannot put a box there, and if they do, the heat will just eat through the inside of it, it wont last long and they wont guaranty it.

Thats BS

When mine was stock I had the cat cut out and a box put in it's place with no issues however that stock rear box is HUGE and does all the work really

It not the physical size the dermines how loud it is. It's the design of the silencer box inside and the quality. Go to an exhaust shop and sak for something quieter. If they can't help go somewhere else.

the pysical size of the box dpes have a small effect on the loudness. But like panic said, the internal design is a bigger factor.
One box on a NA car will definitly be loud. Go to another exhaust shop and get a second box installed, there is plenty of space in the center tunnel for it.

That is the biggest load of BS I have ever heard!

If anything, there MUST be another box there, its a called a MESH WRAP box, its different to the rear box as it is made with some sort of mesh like metal material, its purpose is to absorb the excessive heat coming down from your branch and in that way help to save your rear box from burning out!

If you put your car on a dyno for a few minutes... your exhaust system will overheat due to the lack of air cooling and you will see that rear box burn out and sometimes even sparks fly out when it over heats with the insane EGT's! I have seen it many times on cars with no centre mesh wrap box.

Basically, get a mesh wrap box fitted in the middle! More boxes = less noise!

I learnt all this from my friend who owns Powerflow in Prince Alfred street Durban, his name is Darren, they did some awesome mandrel bend 304 stainless exhaust work for me!

Oh and that droning noise you hear is a characteristic noise of Powerflow boxes... They just love to drone... add more boxes and it will help.

The one they fit there is called a resonator....It removes that droning sound you talking about. Also know as resonance.
