Inner C.V Joint boot replacement

Post by naidup »

Howzit guys just wondering how big of a job is it to change the inner c.v joint boot on a 2003 mk1 1.4i? anything too look out for?
Scared to do it myself after hearing stories of it popping out while driving as I do a lot of long distance.
Currently in PMB. Who would be better to replace it if I had to send it in? C.V joint specialist or Natal C.V joints?
Both R200 including the boot.

Thanks

It's not too bad. For me its easier than the outer becasu the outer you kinda just moer the shaft into the CV and hope the locating ring has done it's job. The inner you can see that the circlip is holding everything nicely.

If you get hold of a Haynes manual for a mk1 the procedure is explained in pretty good detail.

for that price you rather give it to them to sort out, is a very messy and annoying job, you bascially only going to save about R100 if you DIY it

CV Grease is generally Molybdenum Disulphide grease. If it's CV grease, its CV grease whether it comes from Caltex or anyone else, it's not fancy at all really.

I'd be more worried about the quality of the boot that they'll be fitting.
Some CV boots are hard and perish very soon.

For the price, I wouldnt think twice about DIY.

As stated cv grease is cv grease.
Just make sure the boot is soft and flexible.
if its hard it will wear our sooner.

Okay so finally around to changing the boot. The guys i took it to said there is wear on the below part, now from what i know they don't wear as easy as the outer so i told him to leave it, wasn't sure if he was just trying to make an extra R400 of me. How would i know if it worn? is it a danger? it just looked a little rubbed on those channels.
