golf mk1 horn staying on

Post by araf69 »

Tried to put dual hooters today. Wired it up with the relay. But when I put the key on. The hooter says on without pressing the button. Tested the wiring with a test light, seems the problem is with the steering wheel and power is coming from there when the ignition is on. Anything to look for that touching on the steering?

I did remove the steering wheel to put an ignition switch. Old hooter was disconnected at the time but was working with the same steering wheel.

seems like your steering coloum gets ground to me, check the penetration through the firewall if it contacts there!
maybe you clamped a cable....

If you suspect anything on the steering wheel, check the gold contactors in between the steering wheel and the ignition column. Check if there’s no metal contact between the two, if there’s any foreign object making the two to contact remove it. Otherwise verify your hooter wiring. If the problem persists get an auto electrician to check it out for you.

You do know that there is always power on the hooter circuit when the ignition is on and that the steering wheel button grounds the circuit to make it work?

If you take the earth off does the horn stop? If so, that is your problem.

I tried that yesterday the horn goes off when I pull out the earth. Where must I put the earth. I did mount the earth on the body in the engine bay.

The earth must be switched through the hooter button on the steering wheel. When my horn stopped working I pulled in a seperate wire to a button on the dash and used that instead of the button on the steering wheel.

There's your problem. You should just supply the positive, the horn button supplies the earth.

There is an earth strap from the body to the steering column inside the engine bay - make sure it's intact. Also on the back of the steering wheel there's copper slip rings with fingers that get the potentials to the hooter button - make sure it's making proper contact there...

My old hooter worked fine before this. The only thing that I did was remove the steering column to put a new ignition switch. those springs on the steering shaft important? I didn't put then back

Steering Shaft seems to problem. Its too wobbly. Can it be that? Does the spring in the steering shaft play a role somehow?
