Clear coat coming off

Post by JVA »

My golfs clear coat is coming off on parts of the bonnet and left side door. Are there any cheap fixes I can do to make it look better? Maybe water sand it smooth so it stops peeling?

Damn, if it was younger than 10 years, VW should fix it, as paint has a 10 year guarantee.
So sorry I cannot help with your predicament, take it to a pb shop, they should be able to advise accordingly?

Funny you should say... A buddy of mine with a 2006 G5 Jetta TDi went for his 100 000km service at a agent, don't know where. He asked what he can do about his clear peeling and chipping, he said "lets have a look on our system quickly", came to the conclusion that there was a recall on that specific UG batch and his car never got the treatment, he will be receiving his full body respray soon...

why not sand it off with 2000-3000 grit water based sand paper, and then just get some restoluim clear cote and respray it 2 or 3 coats, sanding between each coat. after the last coat if you have orange peel, get a good buffing compound and just sand it again and buff till it shines...?

Im going to try your method as well and see what happens. the sides of my car look brand new, i machine polish them often, its just the bonnet and roof that have clear coat damage.

Just i pick up the sand paper and clear coat spray at a normal hardware?

get it at builders, or any hardware shop.

but get the restoleum clear coat!! best quality!!

Please make sure that when sanding you keep the area wet and do not press to hard!!! also be carefull of not going through base paint. all you want to do is sand the clear coat to a cloudy shade and untill service is smooth. then you clean, and start spraying the clear coat. the paint might look dull after sanding but after applying clear coat, and buffing it will have the nice shine again.

take your time in doing this. give the paint at least 10-15min drying time between coats. make sure the sand paper is water based.let the sand paper lay in the bucket of water a minute or so to soak up water and get soft. then lastly, be careful of corners and edges as the paint is very thin in those areas, pressing to hard or sanding to long will sand through the paint!!!

do some read up on google regarding sanding and painting before attempting this on your car!! practice on a piece of metal or so to get the hang of this.

Thanks for the info.

I'm guessing i use the 2000 grit to get the clear coat off and then the 3000 grit inbetween spraying the clear coat on? My bonnet couldn't get any worse than it currently is, so im not too stressed about it.

jip, use 2000 to get it off, then 3000 to smooth it, then wash, spray, wait till dry, spray second coat, wait to dray, spray 3rd coat, wait to dry for 24-48 hours, then sand with 3000 till the whole bonnet is clowdy then, buf it with buffing compound...should look great.
