DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
So wats the difs I ask this because I was studying my heyns manule the outher night and saw that the valve sizes were the same on both now if i am thinking correctly the heads should be the same as the bore on 1.6 and 1.8 is the same

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
I have just done an head overhaul on what I thought to be a 1.8 mk2 head
To my surprize it was a 1.6 head, because aparently the 1.8 valves are longer thaan
The 1.6 valves. This is what I was shown by alert spares!

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
just remember that you got solid lifter and hydro lifters in the mk2's, that's why the valve lenght differs. the kjet head had the big valves and the carb head had the smaller ones.
like panic said heads are interchangeable but if one is solid lifer and the other is hydro, the camshafts are not interchangeable.

G-grind was ONLY found on 1.8 GTi's
A grind only found on the longblock 2l engines. They were all injection as well.

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
OK the main diffs between the 1.6,1.8,2l heads and the 1.4 head is the size of the combustion chamber and that is quite cleary visible on your picture. Usually the 1.4 that I have seen also has a smaller intake valve but I get a feeling that somebody modified the one you have to have the same size valves as the other heads. You can see where the chamber was cut away on the edge to accomodate that.

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
panic can the chamber be reshaped to fit for the use on a 1.8 motor or could i just leave it as is to push the compretion a bit

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
it's not going to push it a 'bit' it will send it to around 13.5:1. But you HAVE to measure volumes and calculate the CR as every engine differs and what I calculated for one engine 8 years ago might not be true for what you are working on.

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
For what it's worth....I have a 1.4 head on a 1.8 carb block. It's apparenlty been worked with a longer crank etc to be 2.1L
Seems to work...But I haven't tried any of the bigger heads so I don't know if I'm losing any power because of it.
Panic: Would you be able to tell if you had to use less timing when tuning it because of the comp ratio?

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
No can't really tell. you also have to calculate the CR to know for sure. I'm always amazed that guys will just slap a motor together without actually bothering to work out CR for real. There are many factors affecting ignition timing and CR is not the only thing. Some engines are more prone to detoantion than others.

Ok just wondering.
Yeah, It did have a 2L head on it when Jerry had the motor, but he broke the cam bet and killed the head. Sarel rebuilt it with the 1.4 head and he reckoned the compression was actually lower now with the 1.4 head as the 2L head had been skimmed a lot. His words.
I just said "ok"
Apparently they are kombi pistons with the squish pads machined down/flatened or whatever. I have no idea what's Really in that motor. Sarel reckoned the crank was worth more than the rest of the motor combined.

Re: DIFF BETWEEN MK2 1.6 HEAD AND 1.8 HEAD
Well if he calculated the CR then surely he should have told you what it was?. Yes honestly there is no way I can gues what it is without having actually meausred the values. The tuning cannot tell you but the fact that it ran quite nicely with realtively short timing does mean it was relatively high.
