Turbo and manifold is one piece. Get a mirror and remove the turbo manifold bolts...

Take out airbox and intake piping to make space

Ouch, sorry to hear.

Easiest I would imagine is from under the car with the cover removed. You have full access of the bolts in sight, or you could use a mirror like VWicked said.

A little bit of plastic explosive will also work.. but getting everything back in might be a little bit more difficult.

From underneth might work I'm just not sure if things like the shafts and subframe might be in the way. So loosen what you can from underneath and the the rest from above to take it out you'll most likely also have to do from the top.

Having changed the turbo on our 1.9TDI Ibiza a few months back I can say its not as easy as taking one or two things off and then getting the turbo out. Everything on the backside of the turbo has to come out. I took off parts from underneath and from the top to eventually reach the turbo. Then it was a matter of loosening and removing exhaust manifold nuts and pulling the turbo out from the top. Think it might be possible from underneath by removing driveshaft (drivers side).

If you've done it before its about a 5hour dirty dirty job, rewarding nontheless :)

Take off the intake manifold first- remove turbo to top. Also replaceor have ultrasonically cleaned the feed pipe to the turbo.
