Launch control activation on mk5 GTi DSG

Post by VWicked »

Hi,

So I was playing around in one of these recently and wasn't able to engage ze 'Launch Control'. Didn't have time to check if it was in user manual so spoke to Le Clue and he told me how to on a mk6 - Foot on Brake, esp off, Sport mode floor it and it rev's up. Went and tried on a mk5 and that didn't work, drove a mk6 yesterday and did the same and it worked. Is LC activation different on a mk5?

I agree with ruler...Put the car in Sport mode before you put the esp off.
From the videos and read ups i have seen the best launch is at 2400rpm....never tried it as I don't like launching the car.
Let me know whats the best rpm to launch at :hi:

Best way to launch and avoid wheelspin..
Sport or manual mode-Traction off-Left foot on brake-Right foot planted on accelerator-re-engage traction-Car will idle just below 2000RPM- release brake and clean getaway.
I only tried it once and it worked well.

+1 Some of DSG boxes like the one in the new polo gti use dry clutches so launch control doesnt work on those.

Re: Launch control activation on mk5 GTi DSG

Post by Roh Echt »

I see this topic has been around for some time. I have an early 2007 w/VIN ending in 047000. My launch control wasn't enabled when I purchased it in Nov. 2006. I found out that some of the 2006 and 2007 MK5's didn't have enabled launch control. Mine was one of them. All I had to do was go into my local VW dealership and ask for Launch Control to be enabled and the tech did that at no charge.

Yes, the steps are; engine must be warmed, DSG in 'S' or over into Tiptronic mode, and ESP(traction disabled or turned off), one foot on the brake and the other pressing the accelerator(doesn't have to be to the floor...you can pick the rpm you wish to launch), let off the brake and it goes with a tiny bit of clutch slip before full engagement. There may be quicker full clutch engagement if you hold the throttle to the floor. I have a DSG tune and launch can go as much as 4000 rpm. But I prefer to launch at 3k rpm and not at full throttle because I have the S3 K04 and 350 bhp and 363 lb*ft. Launches are not spectacular because need traction and to avoid wheel hop on sticky tracks, even though I have poly mounts and a pair of W.A.L.K. bushings, so 60ft ET is just 2.0s to 2.2s. It still does a fair 1/4 at 12.8s and traps at 110 to 112mph consistently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FuGkN7RYzc

I'm new to this Forum, but I've been on four to five other MK5 forums under the same username; Roh Echt
