Less engine movement

Post by MarnoG »

Hi all!

I keep seeing this on photos of Jap-rockets and American V-Tac yo's:
Image
It looks like a small gas shock absorber, or those (for lack of a better description) stabilisers that you find on super bike handlebars. It seems like the purpose is to reduce engine movement.
Couple of questions:
- What is it?
- Do these things work?
- Use this instead of poly mounts?
- Does it also cause vibration like poly mounts?
- Would it be worth it to invest in one?
- What do you call it?
- Are these things locally available?
- Is it actually a piece of crap?

IMO its a sales gimmic, unless you make like 10gazillion horsepower that actually tears away your poly mounts, then i wont buy it.
I have a rather moderate cam (288) in the golf, all mountings replaced with polyeurothane, exept the two main mountings on the side to where the egine hangs onto, these got poly-inserts to help limit movement. The engine is very "stable" if thats the word you call it for the mods done to it. Downside to this is all vibrations goes through car. Granted you wont balance a glass of water on the motor, but i think with just the poly mounts it is a lot more stable than a standard motor on standard mounts.

I've seen a Golf oval track racer with a rose jointed rod running from the top of head through the firewall to a bracket in the car - zero movement on that engine for sure...
Current rides:

VW Golf - 83 GT 2.1 16V 2-door with throttles
VW Golf - 78 LS 2.0 8V 4-door (2.1 ABF with throttles in progress)
VW Golf - '08 Citi Storm - 1.4 for now
Hyundai - 1.4 Getz (daily)

Should work... Bit extreme though.

I did a DIY-style solid front engine mount on the Jetta and use the normal rear and gearbox mountings.
Very little engine movement, saw that on Panic's dyno.

At idle there are slightly more vibrations than with a normal front mounting, but when driving it is not even noticable.

On my Velo I had solid rubber side mountings and Poly front and back mountings - minimal vibration and a steady motor, no rocking at all.
Current rides:

Thats interesting to know. I'm toying with a couple of ideas for improvements, but as it's a daily driver I don't want to sacrifice too much comfort.

you guys know that polyurethane is available from fairly soft to rock hard? you can pour PU to be about as soft as your natural rubber mounts - normally about 60shore but thats not why guys use PU, its just finding the balance between the hardness and comfort:)

This is very interesting! Does suppliers like Powerflex offer various stiffness/hardness bushes and mounts?

No powerflex comes just in one shore hardness, and it is really hard for a daily driver.

I get all my polyurethane bushes made by andresrubber in cape town and always tell him to make it for a daily driver.

Thanks for the info Shaun! How do your andresrubber bushes and mounts compare to the stock bushes and mounts? Kinda inbetween stock and Powerflex? For interest's sake, how are their prices?

Its a little harder than stock but alot softer than powerflex. Cant feel any vibrations etc

On the polo i had rear and front poly mounts from andre and it came to R300 for the complete set which is 4 inserts, his prices are really good.
