Mag lip size on a MK1

Post by simnzo »

Hi guys,

I need some insight regarding lip extensions on a set of mags.

I recently bought a set of 17" which had a lip of about 3/4cm, I initially wanted narrows and wides but had no luck.

Now i want to extend the lip on 2 of the mags - firstly, is it a good idea? secondly, what is the deepest/longest i can go on a MK1 that will look nice?

Please assist guy before I BMF on something that will be a flop.

Measure the space from the lip of your wheel currently, then see how far you can go, then see what size tire you will use if you are changing and take it from there

@Velofox: Yes its on the eagles, couldn't get narrows and wides on them...

@Dood786: Im sure if i understand you correctly.
I still want to keep the same tyre size (205/40/17).
Please kindly explain your measurements again.

the maximum width a mk1 can accommodate with the correct offset and tire is 9j

your wheels are 7.5j so it leaves you with 1j to extend...

1j = 2.5cm

my car has a 8.5j rear wheel with a 195/45/16 tire..

you can see in the 2nd pic how far out the wheel is from the fender

low car + wide wheel + low profile tire =

With a wider rim, the tire ends up stretching

This is how a 205/40-17 will look on 8.5j

Image

Your standard offset is 35, and the eagle should be a 35 too but on 7.5j its now closer on the inside.

By widening the lip only you will have an offset of 10 but only the lip is moving out so you need to make sure you get clearance

I thought of 13"s but the look honestly doesn't do it for me, i think have jus fallen in love with the whole 17" look... I am not expecting great results like the ones you'd get if you using 13"s but jus a lil'bit of phattness (if there's such a word) at the back...

I guess that’s what makes us individuals, the fact that we all have different styles… I have had the car for four years now, throughout the four years I have been rolling on 17”s, and have never had any problems – other than the norm, low profile problems (potholes)… steering racks is still as perfect as the first day I bought the car… nonetheless, thank you guys for the responses I promise I will take pictures and show you them…

Hey bud, long time?
I'm also deciding whether 16" or 17" on a MK1
You suggest 16" is better.

Nice thread this, helps me decide on the rim size too.

We need more pics with 17 and 16 on MK1's to compare!

if i tell you 13" wheels on a mk1 - there are no nice 13" wheels - besides they wont fit upgraded brakes
if i tell you 14" wheels on a mk1 - there are no nice 14" wheels - besides they wont fit upgraded brakes
if i tell you 15" wheels on a mk1 - he will come back and tell you perfect
if i tell you 16" wheels on a mk1 - he will come back and tell you about the price of 16" tires
if i tell you 17" wheels on a mk1 - he will come back and tell you 17" on a mk1 is retarded.

so 15" wheels is the way to go it seems.
