4 door to 2 door

Post by young gun »

Hi guys I'm posting for a friend!

He also has a jetta mk2 4 door and really loves the look of the coupe' so he was thinking of maybe undertaking such a task.
How much work would be involved? Is it a simple case of just welding up the door and filling in the gaps?
Any info or links would be appreciated guys!

Not advisable - the front doors on a 2-door/coupe is normally bigger than on a 4-door, simply welding up the rear doors will create a 'lopsided' look. I've seen it on a number of Citi Golfs and you can see immediately that it is a 4-door with the rear doors welded in. The right way to do it is to source a set of bigger doors and move the pillar back.
Current rides:

VW Golf - 83 GT 2.1 16V 2-door with throttles
VW Golf - 78 LS 2.0 8V 4-door (2.1 ABF with throttles in progress)
VW Golf - '08 Citi Storm - 1.4 for now
Hyundai - 1.4 Getz (daily)

Or just get a 2 door to start with.

I think either way is gonna be nearly impossible in South Africa, I can not recall seeing a single 2-door Jetta 2 in all my years so they must be pretty scarce...

I have seen 2 locally - both in LHD. As said - the catual door opening is bigger and the pillar is further back. If you simply weld the rear door closed it always looks odd.

Step1: Sell 4door
Step2: Buy 2door

There may just be several years in between steps 1 and 2.

If you bud can source Mk2 Golf 2 door doors, side windows, etc then he can possibly do it, but the expense will be a bit harsh.

Moving the pillar back would mean filling in the metal where half the rear door would be. I've seen repair panels in ETKA for mk2 2-doors but doubt they would still be available, at least from VW RSA.
All things considered, probably easier to import one!

When I considered doing this, I found out the price for rear quarter panels from a certain friendly VW parts guru.
How does 9K sound like for ONE panel?
