1.6 to 2.0 conversion.....YES or NO
Hi guys just wanted to know how easy is the process of boreing up your engines capacity.Besides bigger pistons would the crank have to be changed or flywheel and any of the bottom end hardware?I am new to this so dont be hard on me.Would I make fairly the same power as a 2E for example as from what I hear the head and intake is the same its just the block thats different. What are the costs weighed up ah=gainst the cost of a import 2E taking into consideration that a 2E here in Cape Town costs R4500+ and not R3000 like up country. Thanks in advance and all help is appreciated.

Re: 1.6 to 2.0 conversion.....YES or NO
you gonna need 2lt crank and 2lt pistons you can use your standard 1.6 conrods
Your intermediate shaft must be machined for clearance and theres two places on the block that must also be grinded away due to the long stroke of the crank
you gonna need to upgrade your fly to 210mm with the matching 210mm clutch
You keep your 1.6i head, intake, injectors, fuel rail and throttle body work 100% with a 2lt bottom.
Last thing you need is a unichip or remap on your standard ecu you choice
Dont think iv left anything else out

Re: 1.6 to 2.0 conversion.....YES or NO
Thanks for the vote of confidence Naseem . If I were you, I would call Rebel Motors (012-3236451 / Mee95 on the forum) and find out how much it will cost to send you a motor to CPT. I heard that he recently sent one to Namibia. That is where I got my ADY motor, which I'm very happy with. So spend the + -R4000 on the ADY / 2e motor, as I think it is less hassle and cheaper for the average joe (like you and I) than the 1.6 to 2.0 short block conversion. Buying 2nd hand parts can be risky: I was told that it can be risky to buy a 2nd hand crank (hairline fatigue cracks) for example. Another option is to be more patient and save up for longer and buy an ABF 2l 16v motor from Rebel motors.dood786 wrote:go read sjs's rides thread

As for as I know the 1.8 flywheel and clutch kit are 210mm and therefore will be 100% to use.

Re: 1.6 to 2.0 conversion.....YES or NO
I say go 2e/ADY bro, the cost difference is so small, its negligible in my opinion, ESPECIALLY considering the reliability factor here... Buy a proper, stronger, factory made and designed to be 2.0l block, they are bullet proof and it will save you in the long run, by the time you start machining bits and pieces away and source dodgy internals... 1 hair line crack and its all over. Save up and buy a 2e/ADY sub assembly or the whole motor and sell the head and other bits you dont need. Then simply fit to your existing head and you are away, with a forged steel crank and Mahle pistons too,all safely designed and put together by VW. ( I think some 2e's came with that, just check) Goodluck

Re: 1.6 to 2.0 conversion.....YES or NO
The way I see it:
Dropping in a 2E / ADY = cheaper and easier
Converting 1.6 to 2.0 = it's fun and you learn a lot (if you do it yourself), you have a brand new motor when you are done and no need to register a new engine number
I went the conversion route and I have never regretted it and the motor hasn't missed a beat in 110k kms.
Have a look at my conversion post to see what is needed to convert from 1.6 to 2.0 --> http://www.vwclub.co.za/phpbb3/viewtopi ... =5&t=15416

I agree with mac man. I chose the shortblock route over the longblock import option. In my honest opinion I think they run better too.

Hey Macman, if only we all had your skills , are you a mechanic by trade?MacMan wrote:The way I see it:

@ PoloplayaWP if you were to pay someone to do it for you (1.6 to 2.0 conversion), it will cost about the same as what it would cost to buy a 2l 16v ABF motor . Some import motors are in bad condition and don't perform too well but Rebel Motors sell motors that are in good nick. It is the same as buying a second hand car, some are lemons and others are great buys. I'm very happy with my import ADY motor and its performance from standard to modded (check my ride thread for the various dyno graphs). Changing the engine number isn't as scary as it is made out to be and it really is not a big deal, I've done it twice.

2E should be your easier, quicker and cheaper route.
use all you current items just with the 2E bottom end, sell the extras and bobs your uncle.
