Howzat guys,
My clutch pedal sits extremely low - when changing gears and releasing the pedal it doesn't bounce back?
The pedal sits at least about 5cm lower than the brake pedal?
What cause's this and how can I sort it out?
Car is on 86k at the moment, haven't replace anything on the car as yet except discs pads and shoes done by g60
Could it be the cable that might need adjusting?

You can adjust your cable but I think the problem might be with the mechanism behind the intake manifold. Get a good quality spray oil like WynFlon and spray the mechanism, see if it makes a difference. I spray mine every time it starts sticking, when it feels as if the pedal stays behind when you lift your foot.

The cable streaches over time.
at the gearbox is a cable, it goes through a white plastic disc.
turn it anti clockwise to tighten the clutch cable.
Completely agree with torker, oil the little black box behind intake (also helps with annoying squeaks and squeals)

HI!!
That little black box is called a bell crank unit !!the physical unit itself will need replacement !!its about R100 from the dealer and not to bad to fit!!!!!the unit streches internally and that causes your pedal to stay low to the floor!!

Hi 128Kw, I posted a topic in this forum named "2005 velo 1.4i clutch bracket wear", I had the same problem with my clutch pedal, it was hanging really low like yours. What basically happens is that the bell crank unit gets eaten away over time, mine started at around 100 000km... Try adjusting the clutch cable, the longer the thread is at the gearbox, the higher your clutch pedal will sit inside, BUT this, in my experience makes the bell crank unit wear faster. Just get the new bell crank unit from Goldwagen, I paid R125 for the unit, and R10 for some grease, so the total was R135, whereas the VW dealers quoted me R137 just for the unit, and it's the EXACT same unit, so don't worry that the GW unit is inferior...
Replacing the bell crank unit is a crappy job though, 'cos it sits right at the top of the firewall, so you need to take off the part of the dash closest to the drivers door. That's easy, just unscrew the 6 star-shaped screws holding that portion of the dash onto the dash brackets, and then you'll have easier access to the two 10mm nuts holding the bell crank unit in place... Just hook the clutch-pedal lever into the new unit before you tighten it to the firewall, cos you can't get the little lever into the unit when it's secured... If you need help man, just pm me, I'll send pics etc... Peace>

@Torker and @Rezizter - worked like a charm although I turned the white disc clockwise to tighten but it worked none the less, and used some Q20 on the bell crank so all is sorted now

Hi all. Reviving the post!! I have replaced the black firewall unit, replaced clutch cable and replaced the clutch pedal as it started wearing. The pedal is still very low and I literally just release the clutch and it bites. Please help!! I don't know what to do anymore

I have the same on my 2006 1.4 (or at least when I last drove it some months back).
Clutch lever on the side of the box also sits a bit high, so I'm currently thinking this is maybe a worn out clutch push rod in the box. No idea, will only find out next month when I have time to dig into it.
