Golf 1 door handles

I am beyond frustration with the mk1's door handles.

I have replaced the drivers one about 4 times since i got the car. The 1st 3 times with the ones from GW which they claim are original at R75 each where as VW has them for R530 each. Big price difference however they both dont work.

After replacing the gw ones for the 3rd time i bought the one from vw and guess what, this morning when i tried to open the door the door handle was left in my hand while i was laying on the floor... The entire cover came off.

What do i do? Where can i get proper door handles?

They dont have to be front ones with the lock on them as i have central locking and if the battery dies i can always climb in through the boot. I just want them to be solid and last forever!!!

Haha... I need to stop eating pap!!! LOL

My sonic and velo probably had the same handles but they never gave me problems. Maybe i should go get a set of a golf from a scrap yard rather...

The GW ones are not original. I would take the VW ones back and complain. They cost more because they are (supposed to be) much better quality. An OEM handle should last you a good few years.

jip mine has been changed 4times and i just got fed up gona build audi handels in the car when i
send the car in 4 a respray costs alot but alas no headaches.

But nw on my grandmothers golf the still work like new and its the same year model as mine a 95.

Hi Arbee.

There are two options:
Option 1: I can come help you set it up nicely (Al little trick I learnt over the years) to make it open nicely. You can use any handle, whether it's from Goldwagen, Midas or Stealerships.

Option 2: Get the Polo 6n handles (Small mods needed). They don't stand out as much, easier to open etc.

But I think you wanna keep the car as standard as possible, so my guess is option 1, so if you need some help I can explain how to fix it.

Cool man... I'm going today to buy a new handle. Going to get the gw one cos i aint spending R530 on something that has no guarantee of working forever or long enough to make it worth while.

Let me know your trick on how to make them work lekker... Thanks.

The handles tend to break off if you only pull on the lever, pulling the lever whilst pressing against the handle ( with your thumb) is the proper way to opening the door and makes the mechanism last.

Same with the Polo - some people try to rip the poor handle off the door.

Okay. Long write up. Should make a sticky with pics to explain better

What normally happens before the handle breaks, is the opening becomes difficult. In most cases (And I see a lot of MK1 & Citi owners do this) they start pressing on the lever on the handle & then push the handle towards the car(Not sure how to explain this

)

What happens is that the handle either goes loose (Screw behind the door rubber above the door locking mechanism) & when you press the lever on the handle the handle actually starts moving & not staying where it should to effortlessly open the door. Thighten this screw & the one behind the strip (Either chrome or black) & will most of the time solve your problem.

If this doesn't solve the problem, the door lock on the inside of the door may be sticky or dirty. Take the locking mechanism off the door on the inside of the door. 2 allen head screws (Fairly tight so use force) and clean the whole mechanism inside( Try not to unclip the cable that connects to the lock as it is a b!@tch to get back). Q20 helps to remove old lubrication & dust that accumulated over the years. This will also lubricate all the springs inside. Place back into the place & check if the door works better.

If this doesn't work the the lever inside the door (The one that actually opens the door, it sits IN the door where the windowrails etc, is situated) has bent or is also full of dust. Try to press the lever with your index finger. If it battles to open then it is one of the above. Either use Q20 & spray to clean & lubricate it a bit. If it is bent then the handle on the outside does not press down where it is suppose to. Try to bend it to line up in the best possible way to open easily & put everything together.

Also, try to see if the handle that was supplied is of good quality & if everything works nicely. Try some Q20 here too.

I have tried all of the above & it has solved my problems in the past

Good to see info from 9 years ago is still good
