Mk2 Gearshift Allignment SORTED

Thankfully the board is back...

Looking for some assistance. I decided to replace the bushes and Gearbox Linkages on my Gear Shift with the kit avail from VW and Golfwagen as the originals where looking a bit worn.
It really is unbelievable the difference a few pieces of rubber make. There is no slack on the shift, Forward and back or side to side.
I Should have done it a long time ago. :driving:

But I need assistance in lining up the gearshift again. I have done it about 20 times now and cant get it perfectly.

After tightening the 13mm Bolt and Nut on the Shaft, Some times I cant find 5th. Sometimes its too low and I dont get 2nd or 4th. Other times no reverse.

It is driving me crazy :crazy: :crazy: :crazy: Anybody got any tips that will help. Anything Please.

Without the alignment tool its abit of trial & error. With the gear booth removed get someone to centralise the stick, between no.3 & 4 in the neutral postion. Tighten up, test then make small adjustments from there.

Thanks Bru, I found the template online and made one from H/D cardboard. Hope it works.

How far beyond the clamp should the gear shaft extend (stick out?)

Alignment tool is the bomb, had a new one cut yesterday.
Will be doing my gearshaft rebuild tomorrow.

The difference a rebuild does to the car is really amazing. I would definitely advise anyone with older cars to do it.
But make sure you have the alignment tool before starting.

Kit from GW cost R105. Best R105 I spend on the golf ever.

Although, not sure if it can get better than it is.
I have NO side to side or up/down play.

Housing replacement was a beeotch to do! Yoh. If only I had a nice, high car ramp :crazy:

Jeez, Seems like the GW I went to charged almost double. :eek:
