Removing Brake Light Polo 9N3

Post by Bird87_ZA »

Hi,

Does anyone know how to remove the breaklight at the top (that strip) on the polo?

2 of my globes blew, and I want to replace them.

Thanks,

So after a crap load of help on the forum  , I decided that it is best for VW to do it. That is till they charged me R550 labour ONLY. I was like nevermind, that light can stay broken until the car is worthless.

Anyhow, decided it can't be that hard, so I gave it a shot this afternoon. And yes, I thought about my fellow VW Polo enthusiasts, and here is the guide!! W00h00!!

First, right at the handles on the inside, remove the two screws.

Image

Then, stick your finger between the lock and the body, and just pull. VW uses zink clips, so don't worry about them breaking. Should come of easily-ish. Grey panel removed.

Image

Then, stick with the grey piece, start at the edge and just pull it out. More clips. That's the lighter panel removed.

Image

Now, loosen the three screws. This is basic stuff, but might be hard if your a dumbass. :bang:

Image

Then just start at the edge of the red light and pull it off. It is stuck on, so don't be afraid to pul to hard. It won't break.

Image

That's it, 3rd breaklight is off! Now for the fun part, VW charger R18.00 per blown bulb. And it's only availible at the agents. Awesome hey?

Thanks a lot DarkRanger, I've also been thinking about doing this some time but I didn't know what to do. I've got one bulb blown as well, so now I can finally do something about it!

VW Charges R550 for labour only.

It's not that hard. Took me 8 minutes first time round.

I'm sure those bulbs should be available somewhere else too. What do they look like? Post a picture. R18 isn't too bad though.

I'll put one up as soon as I have time. R18 is bad if you see the size of the globe.

Dealership said they can order, but then it's R22 a globe.

:hi: Thread revival!

Any idea if it will as easy to remove on the 6R? I would assume a similar process. Darkranger, have you done this on your 6R?

Haven't done it, but I'm sure it should be quite a bit easier since the 6R doesn't have the upper bit of trim on the tailgate.

Thanks for the DIY DarkRanger.

Can one not fit a LED light on the brake light now?
Or is the globe completely different than the normal LED globes.

Probably will need to add a resistor for each LED bulb, and space is probably very limited in the brak light unit.

Does anyone know if this process is the same on a Vivo. Need to sort out dead bulbs on my wife's vivo.

Process is the same. I would recommend changing the bulbs to the red LED so you don't have to worry about them down the line.

R18 per a blown bulb is not bad. I wanted to buy two Indicater bulbs and it was around R230 PER a globe.

For the effort and time taken to remove the light i would rather just buy a brand new replacement from vw at around 400 bucks.

The foil-ish background of the light does fade and peel off making the light seem dull
