Carpet covering floor

Post by iceblue »

Does anybody know if there are places that can make up new carpets for the floor of the car? I'm not talking about the loose carpets but the full carpets that cover the entire floor of the car. And approximate price? (preferably in Cape Town)
My other car's a french maid with a large derriere.

Thanks, but I'm quite certain they will want something ridiculous for it. (its not the loose ones I'm after, its the actual base carpet that covers the entire floor).
May try my luck when I go around there later in the week though.

iceblue, have you tried Frans du Toit Motor Trimmers? They are in Parow East Industria. Unfortunately I don't have a price or number for them, but they did a very good job on my brother's ex-Beetle a few years ago.

Yes, I know you don't want the loose ones, that why I said cabin carpets...
If I was refering to the loose ones, I'd have said floor mats :bang:

Cabin Carpets are roughly between R1000 and R1500. Depending on which car you have (you didn't specify).

I can almost 100% gaurantee that buying the carpet from VW will be cheaper than having something made up from scratch.
VW has the complete units sitting in Uitenhage waiting to be bought, any one else would need to measure, cut and trim and then fit. A complete waste of time, money and effort IMHO.

Just my 2c...

Dude I had no idea that they are called 'cabin carpets'. To me, any carpet that goes somewhere inside the cabin would be a cabin carpet including the 'floor mats', which is why I just explained again. I did in fact think you were talking about the one I wanted but was just making doubley sure. :bang:

You may be right about paying more having it custom made. Will try VW first rather.

Thanks

Oh, and its for a MK3

Why do you want to replace your existing carpet?
What's wrong with it atm?

Have you tried looking at scrapyards for decent/clean carpets?

You can sometmes get some bargains at scrapyards.

It got wet last year winter and I couldn't get the smell out of it. Its now eventually disappeared completely, and believe it or not it got flooded again last week. Not sure if I will be able to get rid of the smell this time. I found the leak and fixed it so now I'm just waiting to see if the smell will go away or not. I haven't had a chance to get to any scrapyards yet but will definitely do so. I actually want the carpet black, which is another reason I asked about having it custom made (I dont know if the MK3's came with black as an option).

Get an original carpet,it will be moulded and one piece.. Any fabricated one wont fit 100 percent and has to be sewn together..

I have a GTI. The carpet is that blue-gray colour. My roof lining is black, A-, B- and C-pillars cream and black, seats black. And the carpet is blue-grey!

I will check, though. Perhaps the GTI-Exec and VR6 had charcoal/black.

Ok, so it looks like I'm off to VW and the scrap yards then... :driving:

More than likely it should fit, you might need to make some adjustments to the rear part of the carpet though.
