Ok. The 20,40,60 Thou refers to thousands of an inch above the standard bore. So in metric terms 0.5, 1, 1,5 mm more than standard. So if his car was a stock Gti it would have been 81mm. So he can Have 81.5 mm and 82 mm. Then Stock 2l would be 82.5 mm and then you get 83mm, 83.5mm and 84mm. From there you can work out what you want.
The 2.5 combi piston is 82.5mm and the 2.3 is the same but the piston deck height is different on the 2.5 and 2.3 because of the different stroke those engines came with. If you use the 2.5 combi piston you will have to deck the block as the piston deck height is shorter than the Golf pistons.

Stephan it's for a 1.6i MP9

We got a 1.8 crank.what pistons should we use-well we dont wana go 60thou (size of 2.3/2.5 pistons) so how would a 40thou in other words 82mm work?

If i understand this correctly

20thou - 81.5
40thou - 82
60thou - 82.5 (2L and the same as 2.3/2.5)

Is that correct?

Sigh - I can swear we have been over all these questions before. The 1.6 and 1.8 block is not the same - the one has 1.6 cast on the back and the other has 1.8 cast on the back. But for all practical considerations they are identical. Yes you can bore it to the right size - yes it takes the cranks - as a matter of fact the 1.4 block is the same as well - yes it will take any of the current series polo heads and even most of the old ones. The bolt and water and oil channels are all common - yes even the 16v head. The valve sizes in the 1.6 and 1.8 is the same - The head is common to the 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8. The TB sizes differ slightly.

As for the pistons. The 2.6 combi is also 82.5mm. the stroke differed so the piston height above the gudgeon pin is shorter. If you fit those then the piston sits under the level of the block. So now to get the compression ratio right you have to cut the block shorter to get the piston up to the level of the block again - that is called decking the block - not the head. NO VR6 pistons will not work becuase they have a slanted side to give the correct squish in the VR motor due to the fact that the flat head creates a slanted chamber.

Stephan (Dunno if you gonna be mad but 'ek is dof')

If I should fit a 2.0L crank and 2.6 combi pistons will the block still have to be decked?

Please be patient :;):

Yes it would. It's not such a big thing. Get the pistons or one that you intend using. Fit the crank conrod and piston. Turn it to tdc and see where it ends up under the block. The amount that it is recessed different to your old pistons is how much you need to cut. Remember that the block is now shorter so a vernier pulley will be neede to get you cam timing right. This is the REAL reason for fitting those things.

While we kinda on the topic, I've heard that zapka does a 1.9 conversion to the stock 1800 8v.I believe your original crank is kept, does anybody know what else this conversion entails?

While we are on the subject......the 3.1 conversion on the VR6......is it just oversized pistons? And if so which size? Also, would the standard head gasket still be adequate? How reliable is it. What is the best make of pistons, rings and bearings available locally? ???

For the 3.1 that SAC does it's a cranshaft change - they increase the bore and the stroke(cost I believe is around R26000 +). BUT you can keep the std crank and get slightly over 2.9 L. You have to use some 84mm pistons. The standard head gasket does not work there and you have to get one where the compression ring is made bigger to suit the size of the bore. Best bearings would be KS - piston's I'm not allowed to tell and you can have Zabka do this for you for less than what SAC charge for the capacity conversion. I'm not sure what Tony charges but I've seen some strong VR's come out that shop. See the dyno day results - and that one I believe is still on a stock bottom end last I heard.

Thanks Stephan.

Unfortunately.....

There is no Zabka in Cape Town.....unless you guys can twist Tony's arm into opening a branch here like Golfwagen did.

Who stocks KS bearings? The best known brand of bearing down here is ACL stocked by Masterparts. You did not mention a preferred brand of rings or did you mean KS as well? Where would I buy a non-standard gasket? Is it better then to resleeve and stick with std pistons?

When do you plan on rebuilding the VR6 motor? I currently am on 209 000km that's why I am looking at rebuilding costs.

Thanks :)
