Polo 1.6 missing badly - please help

Post by Rands-POLO »

morning guys,

My Polo developed a problem yesterday. its got a heavy miss and very uneven idle.
Idle goes down to 500 rpm, whn i press the acc, it misses heavy, sounds like a tractor!
Power is down as well.

Changed all teh spark plugs, no difference.

polo hatch 1.6 2003 model with 90 000 kms. ran perfectly till now.

any ideas what to check? fuel filter could be blocked? could it be the cat?

help please

edit : also has a heavy vibration when missing on the steering wheel & backfires sometimes, very quietly though, not loud

Maybe, remove one batery terminal, for 10 minutes, reconnect - it has helped my friends Golf Mk3 with 1.6 MP9 engine. Sometimes the system goes into limp mode for some bizzare reason.

check you MAP sensor, it fits on the intake. Easiest way to test, start the car, then unplug it and rev the car, if it continues to behave the way it is, then its most likely the MAP sensor thats stuffed.

Check the Dizzy cap, rotor and plug leads, if its only misfiring on one cylinder your problem is most probably there!

Was the timing belt changed at the 90 000 km service ?

Ok, heres what I did yesterday :

disconnected the battery for 30 mins as Golfmad suggested : no difference ( did'nt think it was that easy)

unplugged the leads : found the 1st lead that plugs into the 'distributor' (i think) end looks burnt, all the other ends looked clean. so i suspect its the leads. all the leads I had lying aroud were too short to reach the 1st plug so I could not try another.

will go to a mech in town at lunch to try some new leads.

How much does VW sell a new set of leads? or should i just get Bougi Cords?

joggiep : did not do the 90k service as yet still on 89400km, anyway, I dont think they replace timing belt at 90 k service. Do u think it could be the timing belt?

its not the plug leads, bought a new set of Bougi cords & tried it, no difference.

Had a diagnostic done, no fault codes.

Will change the fuel filter tonight, see what happens.

you know its not the cords,

Check:

if the fuel filter is choked
distirbutor cap cracked/damaged
correctly gapped plugs

hope this helps

does the miss clear up when you rev the car, is the miss only there at idle...if so then you need to clean the injectors
