My understanding of a turbo is that it has 2 sides. 1 is connected to the exhaust side from the engine which drives the other side - compressor. The compressor takes in new air and pushes it into the engine. When this new air is taken in is there an air filter or anything to prevent dirty air (smoke, mud, etc) from being taken in? Surely if the air was dirty this would reduce performance...

Yes it does have 2 sides, and yes it sucks the air through a filter like any normal car - either an airbox or a cone filter.
BOOST - The ONLY replacement for displacement.
