Before the G cam: car ran out of steam @ 4800rpm.
With G cam: power started @ 3000rpm,and peaked @ 5300rpm. Consumption was 10km/l even while gunning the car.
With the 268/272 split cam. Power REALLY kicks in @ 3600rpm and still HAULS @ 6200rpm...

Cam specs...

Post by GolfPlayer »

G cam has same specs as A cam, with only difference being the A is advanced about 4 degrees compared to G. A works well on all stock 1.6 8V motors. G is OK for carb 1800, std on K-Jet 1800 motors. There, upgrade to 286/276 for better results. B is the same as A, but with the bearing journal on
cam cap nr 4, in stead of oil sprayer. L is actually some diesel cam that VW chose for the early 1.6 and 1.8 carb motors. Almost OK on 1.6, but runs outta steam at about 4500 rpm on 1.8. Useful for one thing only, and that's as a paperweight or doorstop. Rubbish. Useless. K, I can't comment on, except that a solid lifter K can be cut up to 276h. I had one of those in my old GTI 3.
D is stock 1.6i cam. Not tooooo bad, but A still works better. And oh yeah! Best of luck fitting a G into an 1.4i MP9 engine. Makes OK-ish power, not spectacular. But idles quite kuk. Even Unichip can't sort it, maybe an ECU reflash could.....

G-cam

Post by Mk1-8valve »

Thanks 1.6carbster, so a G-cam should work nicely in my 1800 carb motor, power coming in early at 3000rpm until 5300rpm. I hoping it will give me more low-down torque and better drivability.

a solid lifter K can be cut up to 276h? that's interesting. Anyone to elaborate on that? I'm aware the thread is old but hoping to get more info on this.
