Top Speed on a Velo ?

Post by Ajay »

Any one know what the top speed on a velo is?

On Saturday I was pulling with an E240 merc and i tapped of when my speedo showed 195 km's. I wanted off the clock but i ran out of road.

Factory says its 180kms/h!

Anyone knows?

True speed will be around 180km/h. Mk1 speedometers over-read by quite a margin.

I got my 1.4 up to an indicated 195, probably just over 180 true speed. I've tested my speedo with a GPS and it over reads by about 7.5%.

Its quite eas to get a velociti off clock at the coast.

1.4 - get bout 190km/h speedo
1.6 - off clock speedo

easier way is to look at the revs, and by gearing (ffz) and tyres that are on, u can work out true speed.

cant rembr kmh/revs in 5th, off hand..

with a DGG/FFZ box, 195 50 15 wheels at 6300rpm in 5th, think true speed was around 196kmph.

those are some hectic mk1's you have there!!

I topped a 535 at speedo 240Kmph, My GPS indicated true speed of 210Kmph and the car felt like a paper box.. I would sh1t myself doing that in a mk1!

My mk1 indicates 200 when going exactly 183KMph

On my wife's Polo Classic 2.0 the clock speed is out by +4 KM\H....on my Polo GTI it's almost +10 KM\H ! It shows 128 KM\H on the clock & 120 KM\H on the GPS

All these speeds on the 1.4i and 1.6i's seem super high...
true speed of the 1.6i (Car Magazine) was like 180km/h and the 1.4i around 172km/h??
I could be mistaken...

On my 1.6i I get to around 210km/h - hit the rev limiter in 5th...
pre-mods she struggled to get to 190/km

Your car's top speed is determined mostly by your aerodynamics and available power. Having extra bodies in the car won't affect your top speed, you'll just take longer to get there because it affects your acceleration.

The VW spec for the 1.6 velociti says the top speed is 180 kms/ h!

I wonder what the true speed really is. Many guys here on the forum would agree that they have topped 180.

when they test a car for topend they dont find a 50km highway with a massive downhill and hold the peddle flat as you accelerate downhill for about half an hour till it runs off the clock.

My nephew got caught doing 186 in a standard 1600 carb Mk1 (he's got the summons to prove it). I think it depends how lazy or hungover the dudes building your car in the factory was that determines how it goes on the road.

He went to court (no spotfine) and was fined R1500 - the magistrate must have liked him...

Understanding speedo speed vs. true speed:

Jack the car up.
Drive it.
You're doing 180km/h .. but the garage wall isn't getting any closer.

If it does ... you should've bought the bigger jack stands.
