How do I replace my brake Discs ?

Post by VW-Uziel »

I need to replace them. The old one's got a deep scratch in it. So Goldwagen quoted me R405 for the pads and discs.

I just need to know how to replace it  (time for the upgrade at last.). Dont want to just to do it and mess it up.

I know this might be a stupid question   to some people.

Thx

They are very similar, but not exactly the same.

It is really simple.

1) Jack the car up and remove wheel
2) Use a 6mm Allen key to remove the 2 Allen head bolts holding the caliper on. Take note of where they came from because they are different lengths
3) Pull the caliper off
4) Remove the brake pads and spring clips
5) Remove the single screw holding the disk onto the hub
6) Remove the disk from the hub / carrier
7) Fit the new disk and screw the little screw back in
8 ) Fit the new pads and spring clips
9) Push the caliper piston back using your hands or pump pliers
10) Locate caliper into the carrier
11) Refit and tighten the 2 Allen head bolts
12) Refit wheel
13) Jack down car
14) Repeat steps 1 - 13 for the other side
15) Pump the brakes until they are hard
16) Bed the brakes in properly

6a) Smear some copper grease (anti-seize) on the hub face that contacts the disk.

You never know when rust and corrosion begin to glue things together. First set of discs that came off my Chico needed a klap to remove.

Ideally you want the hub face and the inside of the disk to be as clean as possible as anything in between these two surfaces could cause the disk to not sit flush with the hub face which could cause vibrations.

In the 7 years I have had my car I have never put any copper slip on those surfaces and I have never had the problem you mentioned.

Rather just clean both surfaces with some petrol and it will be fine.

The only tools you will need are:

1) A wheel spanner
2) A strong 6mm Allen key
3) A medium Philips head screwdriver

Usually I just spray some Q20 / WD40 in there and let it soak for a while.
