Jetta 2 CLX is has a decent engine. The same engine was used right through up until the earliest Jetta3/Golf3 CLX. Its quite reliable and provides decent performance. Same motor was available on the early Citi Golf Sport. I have a buddy with a citi sport with this engine, he has a single sidedraught carb + 276cam + freeflow and he beats my 1996 vr6 from standing starts
these mods cost him:
276cam + Vernier R1200
Sidey + Manifold R1300
Freeflow R950 (Supaquick 50mm)
(I have the roadtest of this car at home)(Will try and scan+post it in the week)

I stand to be corrected here but the CLX was one model short of a CLi, so should basically be the same but just not fuel injected. Depending on what you are planning on spending, maybe look around a bit more and see if you can't find a CLi, the fuel injection is less prone to wear, if you get one with a slightly dodge carb they tend to be heavy on fuel. I can get up to 700kms out of a tank if I drive nicely.
Also you will get electic windows, aircon, and all the "big" car stuff. The later ones (like mine) also had power steering, BTW I only paid R20k for my 92 MK2 CLi. and it's full house.

CLi is a better option, but many of the clx cars were full house except for leather and electric windows on some. Cli can be even more problematic if the k-jet fuel-injection system goes faulty. Very difficult and pricey to repair Trust me, i've been through it before. but if its well looked after it should be good for years.

MK2 Jetta CLX specs!
Thanks a lot guys, i suppose i should just go for it then....as for CLi, i don't think anyone would wanna buy that down here in Pretoria because you'll be buying it for someone else to come and steal it . What mods can anyone do to this baby , because i was checking-out dubmodder.com for any ideas and i could only come-up with CLi.
