Want to burn buddie's polo - Inner cv's keep on snapping?
Hi guy's, I need some help urgently! Buddie of mine's 1996 Polo 1.8i with a 4+E (Long Ratio's, 200 then you sitting on +-5400 rpm in 5th) Gearbox he fitted from a old golfie keeps on breaking the inner cv's.
First the right hand one, then left, and last night left again!
Luckily the opel is there to tow. (No offence)
Why does the car do that? :p

I had that problem not too long ago, except with 2 outer ones going, and one inner...
2 questions.. 1. Has the motor/gearbox been removed recently?
2. Where are you buying your cv's?
I found on my car that when the engine was put back, it wasn't 'lined up' properly. (I also struggled to select 1st and 2nd). What would happen is that even with the wheels straight, you couldn't move the sideshaft left or right. Not good.
My outer CV problem was just a terrible quality CV...

He swapped the g-boxes about two moths ago, he wanted the longer ratios? The first cv snapped about a week after the swap, then about a month and a half after the left and then not eve a week the left snapped again.
He buy's reconed inners with a 20 000km guaranty from a cv specialist in Menlyn retail. :p

The car is still 100% standard, no mods exept for the g-box swap thingy. He's not a guy for mods and stuff.
we inspected the first and the last cv's that snapped and you can see the wear on the cage is not in the middle at all, don't know if its to the left or right.
Is the cage not suppose to show the 'load' mark in the centre?

New CV's should not have 'load' marks on them. Its never going to be in the centre anyway because the driveshaft is not perfectly straight (perpendicular to the ground) when its in the car.
You are puting grease in the CV's hey ???

ok. Few things first. The older golfs came with cups on the gerabox that was smaller than the current ones. So the cv was smaller. They uprated them later to bigger ones to avoid breakage. I assume he put the bigger cups on the old box and is using the correct inner cv size for the car. @ndly I don't trust reconned cv's as far as I can throw them. Rather buy new. Then you have to make sure the box is aligned as the other guys pointed out. If you put the car on a 4 post lift like used by exhaust shops - in other words the car is on it's wheels lift it up and feel the shafts. Both of them should have an amount of freeplay sideways. If any one of them does not have sideways play it is putting strian on the cv's in a direction they were not designed for The cage cannot take pressure from the side - it will break apart. If you find the shaft with no freeplay you have a problem and you should loosen the motor and gearbox mountings and move the whole lot so that both the shafts have the same amount of freeplay. If they then keep breaking it's simply bad cv's or he's making over 350 kw on the wheels and he should turn the boost down a bit
