Mk6 GTi | Shock Advice Needed

Post by Reegz »

So this is the first time that I'm having to replace shocks on a performance vehicle.

Life was a piece of cake with the school Polo - and also cheaper.

So far I've gotten pricing for KYB and Bilstein.
  • KYB SuperKwik - R7000 fitted
Bilstein Quote 1 GW - R6650 including mounts; parts only
Bilstein Quote 2 Imcomex - R5520; shocks only
I'm not very familiar with what the better brands would be. Should I be looking at others?

Questions then. Is it necessary to do the rears if only the fronts are showing wear? Is it necessary to replace springs, and if so, which springs should I be looking at?

ETA: What other bits and bobs should I look at replacing at the same time?

Thanks guys

Perhaps give some more info as mileage and i am sure other forum members can give you some valuable input.
Thanks

Yeah should have done that. Mileage is currently sitting at 114k. I've hit my fair share of potholes. That's actually becoming a trend for me towards year end.

Had a flat tyre. Switched out to the biscuit and when I took the tyre in for repair it turned out the sidewall was torn. In addition, had some bubbles on the rear.

Ended up putting on two cheapie tyres to see me through the next 6 months of December/January and in the meantime start making purchases for new tyres, shocks and springs.

If it was me I would go for the Bilsteins, no need on new springs, unless you want go lower perhaps...
And when doing shocks do the top shock mounts as you not going to remove the shocks again just to replace the top shock mounts = dbl work.

If that was me, that's what I would have done :-)

Thanks dude. I'm not inclined to lower the ride height. Very happy with how it is so will keep the existing springs.

GW included the price of the mounts so what do you make of the pricing? I've found them to be generally decently priced (Delarey that is; other branches are whack).

Not sure if I misread it, but is it for front and rear?

Id say go with the Goldwagen Deleray option , They have always provided the best parts for my G7. I also got my top shock mounts from them. Bilstien is also a excellent choice regardless

Yip; that's the plan. Will get from Delarey.

Have put this piece of work on hold for now as it's not urgent.
