If you haven't already been trawling the scrappies now is a good time to start.
Old Audi's are rare finds and you will eventually come right, you just have to be patient. Sadly finding parts will require you to turn over quite a few rocks.
Also try some of the used parts dealers here in Gauteng, some one will probably have what you need.

Re: Steering Column for Audi 1989 500 se wanted
I've never heard of a steering column being the cause of difficult steering.
1) What have you actually done to confirm that the power steering is in fact working, and that the fault is with the steering column?
2) The easiest way to confirm whether it is the column, is to lift both front wheels off the ground. If your theory is right, it should still require the same turning effort.
3) Is there any difference in the steering effort between engine running and engine off?
4) On the type 44, the main pipe from the central hydraulics pump to the power steering rack is known to become blocked sometimes.

Re: Steering Column for Audi 1989 500 se wanted
Hmmm... I'd offer you the rack and column off my old 500, but I'm gonna be needing that soon to get it to the recyclers. I don't think they'd care for removing a vehicle without the column in it. It already doesn't have a steering wheel
But I don't see how the column would cause difficult steering unless it was physically damaged in maybe a smash. Who (and how) confirmed it to be the column?
