Shed Some Light on Globes

Post by Reegz »

Howdy,

So I'm overdue on replacing a headlight. Got quoted 8k by VW Rivonia and that pretty much made me lol and forget about it - up until I got stopped by the cops and threatened with having my disk revoked.

Anyway, sad backstory notwithstanding, I need to replace them.

I've received quotes for Eurolamp, Hella and Osrams. Prices vary but that was expected.

My question is whether it's worth spending the extra for the Hella/Osram over the Eurolamp. Also, what would the key differences be between the Hella and Osram/Philips.

All things being equal, what would be the better/best replacement option here?

Globes are D1S.

Was thatching Wheeler Dealers the other night and Edd did a bit on globes. Expensive vs Cheap and it comes down to materials used, cheap = hard glass and expensive = quartz. So consensus is it is worth spending the extra...

Thanks Howie. What I've been trying to rationalise in my mind is paying 2k+ for a set when there's options available for less than half that price.
I'm totally on board with buying quality parts. It's more a philosophical question of where is the point at which it's no longer about buying quality and instead buying into brand hype (I use the word loosely).

The current set has done 8 years of hard graft and the one is still running strong so I don't question the quality of the parts.

And then, seeing as we're referencing YouTube videos. I've watched a couple where the guys loosen the headlight housing to get access on the passenger side/side where the fuse box is. Is there an easier way to get access to change the globe?

So if price is R2k, then after 8 yrs, it's like R250 / year, which seems a bargain actually.....

Sure. It's against the backdrop of alternatives priced at R800 for a set - which just sounds ridiculously cheap!

But in the end I'll likely end up overpaying somewhere.

But will the cheaper ones last 8yrs? If R800 ones last more than 2.5yrs then other than more frequent bulb changes, cheaper wins.

Indeed.

So it looks like it is going to be between the Hella and Osram. Scouting around for prices at the moment.

I feel silly for asking but heck; it's the internet. I'm going to be dumb some time or the other.

Is there any process for resetting the system once new globes are installed? Or was I just sold a fairy tale?

Forgot about this thread.

Ended up getting the globes for the Golf and the Touran from Autotech Light.

Both the pricing and the service was really good. Definitely recommend them.

That remains a mystery; even to me. Both cars went to @Rascal69 for their annual services and I sent the globes along for replacement.
