Knocking sound from camshaft after 288 camshaft install

Hi guys. I recently purchased a mk 4 with a import APK 2.0L 8v crossflow engine. The car ran very well but I wanted a little bit more top end torque. I decided to install a 288 cam. I had my friend install the camshaft for me because he has done this kind of upgrade before. What I do notice is that there is a ticking / knocking noise coming from the camshaft after it has been replaced. The cam has not been torqued because we did not have a torque wrench but just gradually been tightened by hand, as most people say should not be a problem. this ticking noise from the camshaft sounds like it should not be there or is it normal? The car revs up and drives well. It pulls alot better .We checked the timing almost a 100 times that everything is TDC before starting the car. The only problem is this noise from the cam. Any suggestions? Will remove and refit the cam if needed.

Next weeks post:
My head is fukd, is it the cam I installed fault? Is it bad quality?
Nowhere will it be mentioned that it was incorrectly installed.

What is the lift on the cam, with a high lift cam you have to clearance the head on either side of the lifter hole to allow the cam lobe to swing without touching.

Could you perhaps guide me or refer me to a guide on how to go about doing this. Thanks

Remove the cam and also the lifters.

Refit the cam and turn it by hand, check that the lobes are not touching the head at the edges of the lifter/valve recess.

If they are touching, then the head must come out to have it machined to make space for the cam. Or go back to stock.

Another possibility is that the cam is profiled for solid buckets and not for hydraulic lifters. The ramping on the lobe is different to accommodate for the lifter its intended for.

Speak to Nellis at SportCam. His details are on the forum and Google. He can steer you straight.

Thanks bro. I really appreciate the advice. I have checked the cam lobes and they are not touching the edges of the lifters. The cam that I installed is not a high lift cam. The height of the lobes are exactly the same as the standard cam when I compared the two outside the vehicle. The 288's lobes are wider in diameter for keeping the valves open a bit longer. I will be buying a torque wrench tomorrow and torque the cam to specifications which is 20NM just to be sure that it is tightened evenly. Although I have searched a few 2.0l 8v videos online and they appear to sound exactly the way my car is sounding. So perhaps it is normal?

torque is not going to make it noisy. Touching the edge of the hole is usually the noise. If it does not touch then it is the wrong cam.
Sadly nellis is not with sportcam anymore He passed away - almost a year ago already.
But vanderlinde can check that it is the right cam for your motor. IE not a solid liftrr cam in a hydraulic head

That is very sad to hear.

Nellis was by far the expert in camshaft related matters here in S.A.

Back to the topic,

I agree with Panic, a 288° must have lift as well as duration to be able to provide the increase in performance.

Do you have any pictures of the camshaft? New ones come with a little data sheet, picture of that would also be great.

Hey Missioner. Hope that you are well dude. I will be removing the valve cover abit later today and post a few photos of the cam. Unfortunately I do not have a data sheet. I bought it second hand on a vw group on FB but it is basically in a new condition.

To be sure it is not knocking , I will do a few full revolutions of the engine manually at the crankshaft with the valve cover removed to see if the cam lobes are knocking against the head. I will post a few photos. Only crappy part is to again remove this bloody intake is abit of a bugger with the x flow.

Hi sorry bro my bad. I have uploaded a few photos and a video on youtube of the camshaft rotation. It cam be confirmed that there is no touching on the head. The camshaft that is installed has the code HVP 2288 and 288 H stamped on the edge. Please let me know what you think. Thanks
