S3 (8V) exhaust tips. Removable?

The exhaust tips on my S3 sedan have discoloured to the point where they are practically grey and have lost most of their chrome look. I had one go at trying to clean them with some Meguiars All Metal Polish (a while ago), but that did not seem to do anything, so I did not try again. I was under the impression that the exhaust tips were removable, based on what I had read on some forums. However, when I asked for a part number for new exhaust tips, Audi's parts department and my service advisor mentioned that they do not "clip off" and there is no part number for the tips. Is this true?

They are removable... Use a rubber mallet and knock them out from behind
