Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS)

Hi all.

This is the first time I have owned a car with a TPMS - It's a 2017 Polo TSI. Only realised the car had this feature after an error appeared on the dash when the tyre picked up a screw and started loosing pressure.

I'm looking to swap my 17"OEM Mirabeau rim for another 17" rim. I would like to know if there are pressure sensors on the inside of the rim that need to be transferred onto the new rims? From the outsie, the valve stems look like the normal black rubber ones. Alternatively, if I put on an entirely new set of rims and tyres then will I continuously get a tyre pressure error on the dash?

Thanks,

Does the system tell you which specific tyre has lost pressure? If you can see an info screen that shows individual tyre pressures, there is a sensor in each wheel.
If it just says there is a loss of pressure generally, it is likely to be the cheaper ABS system which detects a speed up of a wheel losing pressure. You reset it each time you adjust the tyre pressure.

Even the deductive type tells you which wheel it is. So that does not tell you anything. I doubt the polo actually has pressure sensors. But it's simple, have a tyre shop take a tyre of one rim. You see if there is a sensor or not.

Yes, it does specify which tyre there is an error.

Thanks guys.

Was hoping to get some feedback from the guys who have already changed to aftermarket rims on the newer, Polo's, Golfs's Audi's, prior to visiting a tyre shop.

The Polo like Golf's uses a sensor that monitors the tyre rotation in - it doesn't have on in the wheel, that's the reason it cannot give the actual tyre pressure but just a warning that the tyre is loosing pressure

So you can change your rims as no sensors are attached to them

Thanks. Appreciated

MK7s use an indirect TPMS system. The ABS system will read the rotational speed of all 4 wheels. If one of them is rotating at a different speed than the others, it knows that one is low.

Would make sense that the ABS would know which tyre, but my Mk6 just said check tyre pressure and showed the warning light.

The MK7 tells you which tyre is low (e.g check rear left tyre pressure)

No sensors on wheels. It uses ABS sensors on rotation to detect low pressure.
