HEAD LIGHT SWOP

Post by Stefan0909 »

Howzit guys,

Have anyone ever did a head light swop on a Tiguan?

I have a 2012 Tiguan, and would like to source the 2013 Xenon head lights with DRL.

Will the 2013 fit the 2012, is there any specific mods that I need to do?

Alternatively, changing to HID lights is a cheaper option, what make is good and what KELVINS should I look for?

Any positive feedback will be appreciated

Buy a car with HID if you want it. Aftermarket conversions suck and you will only piss people off.

You can check an online ETKA site like https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/tigu ... 41-941000/ and see if the headlight part number is the same between the years. Even then if the part number has changed, the shape of the headlight might not have.

Still you'll need the new headlights, ballast and wiring adapter and some coding.
Quick google gave this https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread. ... -retrofit-(without-AFS

Using HID bulbs in the old housing is not a great idea as the reflector patterns are different and you'll likely blind oncoming traffic. see here: https://www.my-gti.com/734/retrofitting ... r-housings

This is the right way butif i were you i would do some internet trawling and find instructions from someone thats done it before. The shape and mounting of the 2 are the same but with all the control units in modern cars, it still might not work. Other alternative is to find aftermarket headlights that have a projector housing, then fit HIDs in that, or buy projector housings and make them fit in your current lights.
It is an ingenius solution to a problem that should have never existed in the 1st place...

I’m looking into this for my caddy changing the entire headlamp assembly using oem parts sourced from the UK.

Quick question. Can a Xenon retrofit affect the vehicle warranty?
I don’t see how different it is to the inferior setup of just adding LED or xenon lamps with ballasts in the existing reflectors which probably is more risky than using oem parts.

Only other issue is with insurance in case of an accident and the headlamps need replacing. VIN will show the reflector headlamps.
Any way of updating ones policy to cover the mod?

Hi Panic.

These are all oem parts and the headlamps will be self leveling.
It’s not a generic aftermarket fitment.

Re: HEAD LIGHT SWOP

Self levelling needs components installed on the car - Ie a unit that is bolted to the chassis and the suspension. It's not built into the light. The mechanism to set it is in the light, the mechanism to test / measure it is on the chassis. So if your car was not specced with xenon those components are missing.
I absolutely detest cars that blind you at night and it is actually illegal to fit zenon type lights in a car that does not do the self levelling function - but hey yes who cares about the law in good ole SA.

Sorry. Misread the concept of self leveling.

Apparently in the mk4 caddy it’s not used and not even factory fitted.

Ok so a very weak zenon. Wonder what the point of it is then. Also is the globes then truly unique so you can't fit a higher output globe.

Yes you can fit a 35w bulb D3S.

Xenon have a whiter light with more throw than regular yellow halogens which I can’t seem to get used to on my caddy as my two other vehicles have Xenon and intelligent LED’s

I have two cars with xenon and the opposite of what you like I actually dislike them. Yes whiter light but not better throw. not even remotely.
LED sure. I have never been much impressed with xenon quite frankly.
But yeah people will do what they want to do anyway. Hope it turns out Ok for you.
if people constantly flash you from the front just know it is irritating.

I always tell the guys if the car didn't come with xenon just let it be

What I see on the road it's very irritating, constantly having to flash people cause of xenon fitted on halogen projectors or levelling not done correctly

I think you guys are missing the point here.

This is not xenons in a reflector halogen housing.
This is the oem xenon projector headlamps.

The end result is just as a factory fitted vehicle.

My bad, I thought it's the aftermarket I see folks fitting that happens to be a replica of Oem with no leveling mechanism at all

Hope you come right

Hi guys Late post but hopefully I get some insight. I've currently rebuilding a front smashed Polo 6 GTI (1st VW project) . because its a gti I automatically assumed it came with projectors (wrong!!!)
I bought OEM 2nd hand headlights just to find that the plugs are different. in fact the standard units have 8 pins and the xenons have 12pins. my assumption is that the extra pins would be for levelling and daytime lighting . I agree with most of you when it comes been blinded by incorrectly installed units. it's real irritation
What else would i need to get that part of the headlight working?

@sbu How did your conversion turn out ?

Where did you source them from. Looking for a complete oem set(xenon headlights, ballasts etc) for my golf 5 gti?
Scrapyards seem to only have the xenon headlights shell.
