Leaking P/S fluid

Post by ML-MK2 »

Hi Guys

A while back I noticed my p/s fluid is low, after getting some info on the forum I found out that I'm suppose to have 'clear' fluid and not 'red' fluid. Bled all the old fluid and replaced with the correct fluid from GW, not long after I noticed that there is a leak on the drivers side of rack. It leaks quite alot when I startup the car pull out the driveway, after a while it's only droplets where I've parked the car. I was thinking their is only the following two options, correct me if i'm wrong.

1. Find a place in Cpt who can repair/recon my current rack( That's if it isn't to expensive and please give me a few places that does these repairs)

2. Change to non p/s. Can I only remove the belt that drives the p/s pump and keep the current rack without the pump running, or what else do I need to remove?

Thanks

Have you priced a new PS rack from Goldwagen. Do that first before removing and disabling the PS system.
I think ZF can recon those racks as they were the makers. check with them to see about a recon.

Yes ZF aftermarket can refurb or do an exchange on certain units

I was under the impression that these p/s racks would not be sold as new anymore. I called two different GW branches , 1 gave me a price of R895.00 and the other 1 don't even have a listing for the p/s rack at all. So I'll have to make some to go view the rack they have, I still need to try ZF and let you know.
Is it very difficult to replace these racks?

Thanks Guys

Defining difficult is always subjective to knowing what you can do and if you have access to lifts and tools. But not 'difficult' as such. More ofma pain in the ass fiddle.

I am having the front suspension, rack and pump on Wolf done at the moment. I am using Summit in Sandton- their reputation is solid. ZF does not do the work anymore and after hours of googling and phoning I realized that no new ps racks are available anymore (both OE and aftermarket). Recon of the rack is around 4k (no removal or refit) and 1700 for a new pump from the UK - don't waste your time with GW pumps.

Oh btw...

If it is a minor leak you can try a seal fluffer like Rislone Power Steering Repair. It is highly effective and made the pump run whisper quiet but my PS system was just too far gone... it came close though.

So I've called a couple of places and as Wolf MK2 said, it will cost me anything from 5k and up to recon the rack :(
Rislone Power Steering Repair will cost me R295-00 + R165-00 for another bottle of P/S fluid + lots of praying that it will work.

Can I remove the belt that drives the pump so that I can still drive the car and not damage the pump? I can atleast look for a 2nd hand rack that is not leaking.

yes you can remove the pulley and use a shorter belt without causing issues.
