Reduce pipe clutter, can I?

Post by Zoltan2222 »

Okay, on the AGU (golf 4 gti) engine that is now in my caddy bakkie, I have an ugly pipe clutter, which I want to get rid of and also make live easier to fit top rad hose and fan.
In the pictures below I marked the following:
Green is where the rad top pipe should go, but if I remove this fitting I can just fit the pipe closer to the head entry.
Yellow is fan switch, i have one in rad so I can use it instead
Purple is a small pipe that goes to the water bottle, I have a pipe on the rad as well, so can use it instead
But now what is the idea with the orange marked pipe, it goes from the fitting to the pipe that goes to the bottom hose on the heater rad.
Can I through out all of this and just do as explained above, and blank off where the orange pipe was?

Post a few more pictures that are less close up.

Need a bit of an overview of the situation.

I reckon it can be significantly simplified, but I think it may require changing some of the hoses to eliminate the plastic joins.

This is one of those where literally you need to stand next to the car and logically go through them. Almost impossible to do with pictures. Are you notnusing the heater in future? Becuase if you want to blank that pipe it means no flow through heater.

Agreed
I have decided to just shorten the one pipe and leave the rest as is, there must be a reason for doing it this way.
I dont use a heater, but I will be fitting all the pipes as needed to it, I dont want this to become a back ally conversion, it should end with a brand new upgraded caddy with everything working like or better than before.
Thats why I ask so many questions.
And appreciate all the feedback and advice that you guys give, I hope to start the bugger this weekend

Ok it seems to me that you may have to change the radiator to get it to work more or less as intended.

I recommend a golf 3 or Polo classic radiator as the pipes are opposite to the Citi/Caddy/Mk1 radiator. At least this is from what I can see. A Mk2 radiator might also work as it uses the same method as the Citi to mount it to the body.

Keep as much of the original pipes as possible and keep the heater pipes connected, as long as the heater core isn't leaking. Change only the pipe on the end to make it fit to the radiator as close as possible.

This means you are going to the spares shop and buying a bunch of pipes that look like they might work and testing to see what fits your application. Don't be afraid to cut a pipe to get it to become the right shape to suit the car. Look at other cars with different radiators to the Caddy to see if there are pipes that are ready made that can work to sole your new setup and keep the cooling system as close to OEM as possible.
