I feel like crying (radiator/intake advise)

Post by Zoltan2222 »

So last night I fitted the IC and rad back into the caddy, and the top pipe on the rad and the throttle body is in each others way.
So, I need a rad on which the top pipe exits on the right or an different intake manifold (maybe APU engine).
Any advise please
Especially the smart guys @panic-mechanic @PapaJo @Thanas

And while on this subject, I need those flat universal fan/s as well.
Please advise on the do's and dont's, and what to look out for, seems I have about 40mm for it.
And who is the recommended supplier in the Vaal?

Either change the Rad to a shorter one and move it to the right - will need custom brackets for this or get the S3/TT Intake- Exits on the opposite side - Will make boost pipe to inter cooler easier as well.

Hahaha, I am fighting many more than 2 wars.
On the wiring side I think I am okay for now.
I do a little each night after 20h00 so I do what seems fastest at the moment.
Turning the rad around is not possible as it has 2 pins at the bottom that mounts the rad.
The sad part is I bought this bigger rad a long time ago with the idea of the conversion in mind and now I need to go smaller again. Sad very sad. I would love if I can find a rad of the same size but the pipe on the right side, I will be visiting Hetdre tomorrow to check.

Is there no way you can make a custom waterpipe? maybe check at other 20v motors and see what they did

Theres no way of the water pipe clearing that even if you used a 90 degree bend, the throttle body and accelerator cable butterfly will bring it against the radiator outlet.

Might be possible to modify the rad end tank but will affect flow , So it's either get another intake mani or get another rad.

Thats a huge radiator.

I am busy reading some more on it now (hope the boss does not catch me) seems like I found a lekka post on the whole swop at vwvortex just now.
I have done a lot of reading before I started as well, but someone did mention that every conversion will be different, as everyone has their own opinions and only certain parts available or allready owe parts that they want to use exc.
I think I will be starting a new thread in the near future with things I have done to hopefully also assist some others who want to do it.
I think my best solution to the rad now (if I dont find one with a pipe on the right) is to just fit a smaller one again (caddy one smees to fit okay and its slightly larger then the normal mk1 rad, so happy medium there)

Jip, its huge, the smaller rad in the pics are the original caddy rad and its allready longer then normal mk1 golf rad. If I remember correctly now the current rad is 920mm from outside to outside. Intercooler is 950mm inside to insideImageImage

The other issue is the intercooler you using so you forced to work between it , if it wasn't for the intercooler outlet , you could've moved the rad and make custom brackets but suppose just do it proper/neatly and get another rad.

Have you worked out how you going to run your boost pipes?

Just like you said it now, the i tercoolet was very cheap and I am trying to do the conversion on a budget, so yes, I need to work around and with what I have.

Yes I have a pritty good idea, lets try and explain. The TIP wil start with an elbow straigth up and then an elbow again to the direction where the carb use to be, the filter will then sit where the carb was. The boost side will go behind and over the brake booster and then straight down to the IC, other side on the IC might be 2x 90° elbow, or it gonna be a stress again.

Dude, use the smaller rad, finished. The big one is a round tube core which is less efficient (if both are the same size, the round tube will cool +-20% less efficiently than the flat tube.) Flat tube core always better especially when you consider the motor in its original application would have used a flat tube core.
It is an ingenius solution to a problem that should have never existed in the 1st place...

Cool, I remember a subject about the round tubes and flat tubes now. I will check if I can find a caddy rad tomorrow and just pop it in. I would have liked if it could mount in the centre, for the look of it, but its such a small detail no one would have noticed anyway.
And at this stage I want to get the thing running as fast as possible withouy taking short cuts, and then save up again to do some more "upgrades"

I ran a 20vt in a caddy for years - using it to tow my race car around and never had cooling issues. Also Use the stock fan with shrouds - Does a much better job that those flat aftermarket fans attached directly to the rad.

I am hoping to use the stock fan, but at this stage it seems it will not fit as I need to fit my rad according to my IC and that cause the fan to sit more to the engine side and not over the gearbox. But if I get another rad maybe it fits. I hope, it also saves time and money to keep what I have

get someone to fabricate custom tanks on the radiator and just change the position of the pipes, for example...side entry maybe.

Not sure if they can weld onto the oem cores though.
