Gearlinks in the way of the turbo

Post by Zoltan2222 »

This is kind of a 2 in 1 question.
After fitting an AGU engine into my MK1 caddy bakkie, I cannot shift to 2 or 4 as the gearlink bumps into the turbo.
Can I simply bend the link down (about 20mm) or is there a better solution?
Other part of the question, can this be due to my engine not laying correctly in the bay? All the mountings are fastened but should I maybe try an shift the engine in some direction?

Some photos to help explain the situation, turbo still closed with plastic bags.
Thanx again panic, modify as in just bend? ImageImage

I thought about turning the exhaust manifold around, but I think the "bend the link" plan should do for now. And then I will save untill I can afford a good turbo and custom manifold. I read that the standard manifold is crapy anyhow

I gad the same issue with the Golf2 nanifokd fitted on my 7v HV motor where the clamps and downpipe sits over no 3 exhaust port. Bend it down and drove like that. Throw becomes a bit shorter too due to the angle of the round bar.

See from your pictures you have the weight on the round bar. Just check that it clears over the gearbox casing.

Now with the 16v motor installed, I have bend the L shape flat bracket on the gearbox side where the shaft bolts on too where this long round bar fits. Round bar sits level again now, clearing the gearbox casing and the shift feels better than before.

Great, I wanted to do it tonight, but then I got caught up in opening the harness instead. The next thing I need to puzzle out now is how the hell a 76mm downpipe will get past the steering shaft from the steering wheel down to the steering rack

On a standard turbo you don't need a 76 mm downpipe.

What size would you recommend? I have a piece of 76 with a bend on it, that is why I was thinking of using it

Aaahh. "The bigger the better." Less restriction, more free run on the turbo.

All popular old wifes's tales. The restriction on that sits inside the turbo. Going to a drain pipe after the turbo don't make massive hp. The guys that tell you that is the ones trying to make money from selling the system. I have dyno graphs of a car we tested by literally doing just a downpipe. 2l tfsi TT.
We removed the stock downpipe which included still the cat and changed it to one of these 76 mm drain pipes.
It made 9 hp LESS than with the stock system.
Owner elected to keep it because it sounded great and he could not really feel the difference.
I have often in the past invited people to prove to me it worked , On its own, not with other mods and nobody has ever elected to come and do pre and post runs.
But because everybody does a downpipe and then a bundle of other mods which usually include mapping they think the downpipe in massive size must have worked.
But hey - each to his own - have fun making that 76 mm pipe work.

Think the links issue is now sorted. Took out the shaft with flatbar and gave it some good love with the convincing tool so its more straight, turned the link around so the weight is more to the brake booster, and now the linkage miss the turbo. I had to break out the shaft of the short link and tap the connection joint to M8, and then used M8 T.bar so I can adjust the left to right travel on the gear lever.ImageImage

Well done

How is the motor running and how much did it cost you for the motor?

I am thinking of doing this on a MK2 Jetta.

Engine has not even started yet, planning to try on Saterday or Sunday. The engine was R10k (after alot of negotiations) MYM autoworld.
And about another R15k for all the other stuff. Luckily I can do most of the labour myself, saving heaps off money.

30k minimum budget when you do most of the work yourself.

A fair bit of money spend, worth it once up and running.

Image Blikskottel 30 ImageImage I thought it was as simple as modifying the mounts and exhaust pipes then off you go but I guess like you say it’s worth every penny spent when done right.

Every conversion is its own job, I went for carb to FI, so the management along was about R5000 (but I got second hand and new mix for R3000)
