VW MK1 VELOCITI 1.8 GOLF 4 GTI CONVERSION
good day All
trust you are all well.
this has been discussed before but i just want to find out more details for the build.
i am thinking of dropping a golf 4 1.8 gti agu motor into my 07' velo and just need some advise, i am not looking for power just want to get that sneeze of the turbo and think it would be cheaper to buy a engine then turbo the current 1.4 engine or buying the bolt-on kits.
1. can i use the FFZ box i currently have on the 1.4 engine?
2. can i put a bov on without upgrading the turbo?
3. what management do i need?
4. can i use the stock exhaust system and just fabricate it to fit the turbo?
5. what other work needs to be done to get everything to work in harmony with each other?
6. what figure am i looking at to do the whole conversion(all the bells & whistles)?
i understand i need the following to do the conversion :
* new motor
* gearbox (if needed)
* fabricate exhaust to cater for the turbo
* management
* uprated / new braking system / disc's all round
* bigger radiator
* intercooler
* BOV
* boost pipes
thank you in advance

1. can i use the FFZ box i currently have on the 1.4 engine? - Yes
2. can i put a bov on without upgrading the turbo? - Yes
3. what management do i need? - Ask the guy that is going to tune it what he prefers.
4. can i use the stock exhaust system and just fabricate it to fit the turbo? - No will be too restrictive
5. what other work needs to be done to get everything to work in harmony with each other? Lots
6. what figure am i looking at to do the whole conversion(all the bells & whistles)? - piece of string question. R50 to R90K.

O ja, get into contact with Renaldo at Goldwagen Delarey for the engine mounting.

Re: VW MK1 VELOCITI 1.8 GOLF 4 GTI CONVERSION
thanks Bud @ Zoltan2222, i am from Pietermaritzburg.
Only thing i'm having an issue with is the engine, they come with 1 month Guarantee's and its going to take 1 month to do the conversion
i found a gearbox for 3.5K but they told me to just change the clutch, flywheel & pressure plate in the FFZ box.

Re: VW MK1 VELOCITI 1.8 GOLF 4 GTI CONVERSION
I myself will keep the ffz box I have, luckily for me the caddy allready uses the 210mm flywheel and clutch and I replaced it about 5000km back, so I am set there.
I also had that 1month worry, but lots of people said that these engines are in good shape, just avoid buying private

Re: VW MK1 VELOCITI 1.8 GOLF 4 GTI CONVERSION
what other conversions did you have to do or know of doing to get the build/car running 100%?
because my guess is if we use the FFZ box you dont have to change the g/box mountings only the engine mountings.
from my knowledge all i need for the build is:
* fit engine with mountings
* fit gearbox (current box & change clutch, pressure plate & flywheel)
* dicktator 60-2
* custom exhaust
* bigger radiator
* intercooler & boost pipes + bov
however i am abit concerned because i know golfs aren't known for the durability so the extra power got me think what else needs to be changed - like CV's etc.

Re: VW MK1 VELOCITI 1.8 GOLF 4 GTI CONVERSION
I am a noob myself but if you ask, smart people like Papajo and Panic-mechanic start answering.
With your dicktator 60-2 you also need the dicktator quad module.
You need a downpipe from the turbo to exhaust
You need the cam belt side engine mount, if you keep the ffz the other 3 mounts stay.
You need intercooler (can remember if you mentioned it and cant check while typing)
Boost gauge
A decent tuner (also speak to them as everyone has their own requirements aswell )
I have read about a different cam belt tensioner (yet to confirm once my mounting arrives)
Get all the service parts
Change the cam belt while its outside
Check you fuel pump (i had carb so needed a fuel pump)
Wash, clean and polish the engine
You need a shorter vbelt if you remove the powersteering and aircon
Boost pipes and yes exhaust upgrade
Radiator hoses
Upgrade brakes (i am still wondering about cvs)
Better tyres
And you need tools and stuff

Re: VW MK1 VELOCITI 1.8 GOLF 4 GTI CONVERSION
Thanks, you too. First big hickup now is the cam belt tensioner once you fit the other engine mounting, I made a thread aboit it but the thread disappeared. I am now planning to use the original tensioner buy with a locking washer at the back. Has anyone tried this?

Re: VW MK1 VELOCITI 1.8 GOLF 4 GTI CONVERSION
Driveshafts are a must upgrade.
Stock the 1.4 uses 90mm CV joints and they will not last longer than a hiccup with anything over 90wkW.
100mm diameter CV joints are strong enough and should hold stock 1.8T power and torque. Just don't be fooled into using the stock shafts and just upgrading the joints, the lengths differ by 18mm. I have paid the school fees to know this. Solid make complete shafts that won't kill your budget and VW themselves still carry stock of both 90mm and 100mm at reasonable prices. Alternatively go visit used parts places and be prepared to replace the joints. Just take a tape measure with and know the length of the shafts you want.
Converting the gearbox is easy, all you need is the 100mm driveshaft cups, a simple tool to remove and install the cups and a snap ring pliers. The remove/install tool is easy to make and the materials are readily available. Search for my CTi thread to see mine in action. The rest is all plug and play, just make sure the big but on the outer CV is properly tightened. 250Nm or in other words FT.
