New Golf R 7.5 Exhaust

Post by chixm »

Hi Guys

I was hoping someone could help but might just be a dumb question. I just this weekend purchased a new 2018 Golf 7.5 R was doing a thorough inspection on my vehicle with my limited mechanical knowledge and noticed the exhaust system seems to have had some work done on it. Not sure if this is normal on a brand new vehicle and was hoping someone could confirm if this is correct or not? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

:iagree: Looks normal. "Rust" is from the welding but nothing serious

If it's bugging you , Get a can of Silver spray , tap off and spray

Thanks for the quick replies

My question was regarding the welding. Should there be welding? Was something repaired on this exhaust or is this normal even on a new car?

Thats normal. The welds are for the valves that control the sound of the exhaust. Try and get a look above the welds to see what i mean.

It is very diffucult to join pieces of metal together without welding. At this stage it is the only existing cheap enough and strong to be employed method in the world. There isn't a glue that you can do that kind of join with currently.

Any exhaust system has welds in it, whether it be piping to piping, piping to box, hanger to box, etc.

In some cases, especially with MIG and TIG welding, there is no stronger join available for metal to metal.

Perhaps remove the exhaust and send it for galvanizing , will look OEM +

Most crappy welds are usually treated afterwards, in this case , It wasn't

Amazing how nothing gets said about TIG welding since it looks cool but MIG and let it be brown then it's considered a problem.

I assumed the OP was referring to these welds only. ImageImage

Those could simply be extension pieces so they can make the exhaust tip and pipe immediately behind it exactly the same at the time the exhaust is manufactured for cost and/or simplicity purposes. I wouldn't have suspected any work being done looking at those pictures, I'll have a look at my car though for comparison purposes.

That would be silly from a manufacturing perspective.

Thanks for the pictures

Not really, it means that they can manufacture identical exhaust tips with piping and the only piece that changes is the connecting pipe for the outer tip which may be a straight or have the exhaust valve in it instead of manufacturing different inner and outers depending on whether exhaust valves are fitted or not. I am obviously speculating though knowing the lengths to which car manufacturers standardise platforms, parts, etc.

Awesome guys thanks for all the replies. I am not very clued up on the exhaust system etc. I just wanted to confirm if it is normal and that I have nothing to worry about. I can see that it is normal from all the replies above. Have had previous bad experience with a new car that had a door resprayed by the dealership and only found out about it 6 months later. So just making sure about everything this time.
