electrical issues

Post by jason=JAKE »

Hi all. so latetly my golf 1. old golf 1 1898 1.3l has some weird electrical issues. All of a sudden my water temp light is always permently on even though it has coolent and enough water. my oil warning light also comes on but without buzzing. when I use my flickers it will randomly flash lights and with my lights on it will also randomly flash. when any electrics is used like flicker or headlight even my oil warning light is on, almost all my relays click and sometimes they click so fast its like buzzing noise like its buzy shorting out.

what can be the cause

[Edit: 1898 is indeed a very old Golf. :troll: But jokes aside...]

I would start by checking all ground connections, especially the one underneath the dashboard. I think on the Citi it should still be in more or less the same location as on the old Mk1s, namely on the inside of the firewall, above the fuse box, essentially behind the cubbyhole. It's a crown-shaped copper connector onto which several brown cables go. It should be corrosion-free and mechanically tight.

It looks like this, at least on my Mk1:
