Oil smells fuel on 8P S3...Any ideas

Post by Jet Li »

Morning.

Everything else looks fine to me but yesterday when I checked oil level, could smell petrol and it got me concerned.

Car was last serviced in May 2018 and cam follower was also changed. Took it in this morning at the service shop and still waiting for their response.

Any ideas that could help to narrow it down will be appreciated. Thanx

there really is no way to check if it leaks. But if there is the smell of fuel in the oil it is the only place it comes from. Change the HPFP.

Hi,
If you have access to vcds or obd torque, you can monitor your short and long term fuel trims, if it's outside of spec (more than -10), your ecu is trying to remove fuel to balance out the rich condition.
Chances are your hpfp is leaking fuel into the oil. I had the same issue a week ago. Switched the hpfp out and issue resolved. (Same engine as yours).

There's a seal inside the hpfp that can cause this leak. When you remove the HPFP and the seal was leaking, you'll see the small amount of oil in HPFP casing will be diluted with fuel. (Or at least in my case it was).

It's important to note that it's not the outside seal that you can see when the whole pump is out. It's the one inside the pump itself.
Remove the piston assembly with an 18mm deep socket from the HPFP to gain access to the inside seal once the HPFP is out.
Might be something else but this happened to be my issue.
Also change your fuel when you have resolved the issue.
Oil contamination is catered for to a certain degree by modern oils, bit once your oil level starts rising due to excessive fuel, best to change it.

Is your HPFP oem or upgraded?

"...Also change your fuel...", meant to say oil.

Cool glad it's sorted. Did they replace the internals only or the whole pump?
